Darren Byfield has revealed he chose Millwall over Gillingham because of the Lions' greater ambition.
The 29-year-old striker rejected a contract offer from Gills to sign a three-year deal with Millwall, who will play in League One next season.
Millwall's recent history has been troubled both on and off the field but Byfield is confident their fortunes are about to take a turn for the better.
"Millwall are a club that only a few years ago were pushing to get into the Premiership, and in 2004 they reached the FA Cup final," he told PA Sport.
"Gillingham do not have that history. The new Millwall manager (Nigel Spackman) is trying to bring in more players, and it is nice to be wanted.
"Millwall have been interested in me for a long time, and I want to repay them for that."
