Former Chelsea midfielder Nigel Spackman has been appointed as the new manager of Millwall.

The 45-year-old, who also played for Liverpool and Rangers, had held managerial posts at Barnsley and Sheffield United but has most recently been working as a television pundit.

Millwall parted company with David Tuttle in April after relegation to Coca-Cola League One, two years after appearing in an FA Cup final.

"We are delighted that Nigel has agreed to join us as manager. It has been an intensive process in which we have interviewed a number of excellent candidates," said Millwall chairman Stewart Till.

Spackman also had experience in the England set-up, coaching the under-18 side, and Till added on the club's official website: "In doing so, we drew up a set of criteria which we believe a Millwall manager needs to meet, and Nigel Spackman impressed us greatly in terms of his experience in the Premiership, the Championship and coaching young England teams.

"He clearly possesses the requisite vision, commitment, footballing intelligence and has a plan to restore Millwall to our rightful position as, at the least, one of the leading Championship clubs."
