MILLWALL NEWS
Picture Steve Cotterill - furious with his team.

COTTERILL SLAMS CLARETS

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill blew a fuse after the Clarets' woeful performance helped relegated Millwall move off the bottom of the Championship.

Lions' caretaker bosses Alan McLeary and Tony Burns - in charge of their first game following David Tuttle's departure this week - picked one of the youngest Millwall sides ever and were handsomely rewarded in a 1-0 win.

Exciting prospect Marvin Williams, 18, grabbed the winner on the stroke of half-time but Cotterill was furious.

He said: "I was looking for a performance and I got nothing.

"It took us seven hours to get here on Friday and by the look of us it was going to take seven hours to get going.

"The players have got two player of the year awards nights this week and they will be embarrassed to walk in after that.

"Millwall's young boys were a credit to their club but we aided that. We've been on a good run recently but you wouldn't have thought it looking at that performance.

"I feel very sorry for the fans who had to get up early to come down here and watch it."

But McLeary was delighted with his fledgling side as they dominated throughout to earn only their fourth home win of the season.

"I'm thrilled with the win to get the club off the bottom," he said. "But the performance was excellent as well.

"The lads that we picked are the future of this club and they have lifted the spirits of the supporters. We needed to lift the crowd after the week we've had and we certainly did that.

"The supporters of this club have always appreciated effort and when they get that they get behind their team and I'd like to thank them for that. Marvin (Williams) was excellent again and he's having a strong end to the season.

"He's been used as a substitute a lot but from the start today he was sharp and deserved his goal."

Lions debutant Will Hendry missed a glorious chance in the fourth minute, with just Brian Jensen to beat he blazed over. A minute later Andy Gray went close for the visitors but that was as good as it got for them.

Marvin Elliott also forced a save from Jensen before Millwall were gifted the lead in first-half stoppage time.

James O'Connor's woeful back header found Williams and he coolly lobbed over the advancing Jensen for his fifth goal of the season.

Williams again went close on the hour, Elliott tested Jensen from distance and Ben May also spurned a good chance as the hosts dominated.

But they were almost punished at the death by Micah Hyde but his goalbound shot was blocked by Paul Robinson and Millwall deservedly held on.
