Millwall skipper David Livermore has revealed the players had been desperate for David Tuttle to continue as manager.
Tuttle left the club by mutual consent on Thursday after the Lions' relegation to League One was confirmed earlier in the week - but Livermore praised the work Tuttle did since replacing Colin Lee at the helm last December.
Livermore said: "Everyone is gutted. We had a feeling that it might have happened, but we thought it would have been at the end of the season.
"We all think David Tuttle did a good job and we all wanted him to be the manager here. He has worked extremely hard.
"I don't think there is another man who could have done as good a job as David Tuttle did."
