Jamie Scowcroft helped relegation-threatened Leicester end a six-match losing
streak and collect a point against Alan Curbishley's Charlton.
Leading scorer Scowcroft scored his seventh goal of the campaign to boost the
Foxes hopes of only a fourth victory of the campaign.
But Jason Euell levelled for the Addicks to leave Leicester still 12 points
adrift of the safety zone with only nine games left.
Leicester's six-year run in the top flight is all but over but at least they
played like a side who have recovered some pride after throwing in the towel in
the last home match with Derby.
Manager Dave Bassett had read the riot act after that game and the team showed
more purpose and commitment than had been evident on that sorry Saturday a
fortnight ago.
Muzzy Izzet was City's most creative player despite suffering a first-half leg
injury and at one stage it looked as if he would have to be substituted.
Scowcroft had caused problems in the air before limping out of the action
shortly after half-time while Frank Sinclair was impressive at the back.
Charlton, who have one of the best away records in the Premiership, produced
one of their less impressive performances away from The Valley, particularly in
the opening 45 minutes.
They needed some determined defending to stay in the hunt, including two
goalline clearances, during that period.
But a point took the Addicks away total to 19 for the campaign and they
provided the man of the match in Scott Parker who must have impressed his
watching England Under-21 coach David Platt.
He looks comfortable on the ball in the centre of the park and made some
incisive breaks at the home defence.
Mathias Svensson was the first to threaten when he shot over the bar from 12
yards out after good play by Parker.
Leicester played with plenty of purpose and they scored only their ninth home
goal of the campaign after 20 minutes.
Matthew Piper got past the challenge of Luke Young on the left flank and sent
over a dangerous cross which was met by Scowcroft who sent a powerful header
past Dean Kiely.
The Charlton keeper was then relieved to see a looping header from Paul Dickov
just clear the bar after he had been caught off his line following another cross
from Piper.
Brian Deane then sent a shot on the turn into the side-netting and then Jason
Euell came to the Addicks rescue when he headed a volley from Piper off the
line.
Leicester continued to look the more threatening but they were relieved when
Sinclair came within inches of scoring another spectacular own goal.
The former Chelsea defender tried to clear a centre from Young but sliced it
against his own crossbar.
Chris Powell became the first player to be yellow-carded after he kicked the
ball away when disputing a free-kick awarded to the home side.
It was against the run of play when Charlton got back on level terms after 41
minutes. Damien Delaney failed to cut out a pass from Svensson to Graham Stuart
who had time to float a centre into the path of Euell who made no mistake from
close range.
But the home side nearly regained the lead in first half injury-time when
Parker cleared a downward header from Sinclair off the line following an Izzet
corner.
Leicester were almost caught out at the start of the second half by a deep
cross from Paul Konchesky which Stuart got on the end of but could only deflect
straight at Walker.
Bassett was booed when he replaced Scowcroft with Stefan Oakes after 52
minutes although it was apparent the former Ipswich striker was carrying a
knock.
Piper just managed to stab the ball wide of his own goal after it had bounced
off Delaney towards Jon Fortune at the far post.
Stuart had a volley blocked and then Parker went past four players but ended
his run in tame fashion with a low shot straight at Walker.
But Leicester gained a second wind and Brian Deane could have put them back
in front after 70 minutes.
A corner from substitute Oakes bounced off Fortune into the path of Deane
seven yards out but he placed his shot too close to Kiely who was able to save.
