Coventry finished the season on a high with a hard-fought victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Malta international Michael Mifsud gave Coventry a 1-0 half-time lead with the game's first shot on target.

Jay Tabb made it 2-0 10 minutes after the break before Paul McVeigh pulled a goal back just after the hour.

The two sides had played out a largely uneventful first half with a distinct end-of-season anticlimax about the occasion with both sides playing only for prize money.

Andy Gray went close for Burnley inside the first minute but his left-foot shot from 12 yards cleared the bar.

The hosts created much of the early pressure and home defender Wayne Thomas headed wide from an outswinging Wade Elliott corner in the 12th minute.

A scrappy opening phase was otherwise devoid of chances as both sides were frustrated early on.

Coventry's first chance came just after the half hour but midfielder Isaac Osbourne's shot from the edge of the area was blocked by Joey Gudjonsson.

Mifsud put the visitors ahead in the 40th minute with a left-footed strike from the left side of the area. City broke two against one but it looked like the chance had gone when Michael Doyle found the striker.

Burnley made two half-time changes, with Steve Jones replacing Alan Mahon and McVeigh coming on for Ade Akinbiyi, and the game burst into life with both sides exchanging shots in the opening minutes.

Mifsud went close from the middle of the box, drawing a fumbled save from Burnley keeper Brian Jensen.

The hosts went straight down the other end but Andy Marshall comfortably dealt with Gray's speculative shot.

Soon after Mifsud had another chance from the edge of the box but it flashed wide and Elliott also went close for the Clarets in similar fashion.

Tabb extended the visitors' lead in the 56th minute when the midfielder broke into the box to finish Kevin Thornton's through ball.

Thomas headed wide shortly after for Burnley from a corner before substitute McVeigh pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when he finished coolly past Marshall from Gudjonsson's central pass.

Jensen saved comfortably from another Tabb effort and Liam Davis replaced Kevin Thornton in midfield for Coventry with just over 20 minutes left.

Kevin Kyle almost restored a two-goal lead but his shot crept past the right post and Mifsud again went near.

Jensen was at full stretch to tip a Kyle header round the post and Thomas missed a late chance to equalise as his close-range header from Elliott's free-kick went over.

The Clarets piled on the pressure late on but could not break through.
