Lee Hughes struck a dramatic injury-time winner to keep Coventry's promotion
bid on track and further dent Norwich's hopes at Highfield Road.
Coventry wasted a host of second-half chances and it seemed they were going to
have to settle for a share of the spoils.
But Malky Mackay conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box, Muhamed Konjic
struck an effort against the crossbar and Hughes was on hand to head the ball
into an empty net to score his 14th goal of the season.
The Sky Blues, who got their play-off bid back on track with victory at home
to Sheffield United on Tuesday, fell behind on the stroke of half-time to a goal
from French striker Marc Libbra.
It put the Canaries, yet to win away from home this year, on course for
their first win at Highfield Road since 1980 - and only their second in 69
years.
But Hughes levelled from the penalty spot six minutes after the break with his
13th goal of the season after Adam Drury was adjudged by referee Uriah Rennie to
have lunged at Morocco international Youssef Chippo.
The goal sparked Coventry into life and Hughes had another chance five minutes
later but, like he did in the first half with a similar opportunity, placed his
header wide.
Drury then needed to be alert to hack away Jay Bothroyd's header and
goalkeeper Paul Crichton, still searching for his first win in a Norwich shirt,
made a comfortable save from Thompson as his goal came under the cosh.
Hughes was denied a chance to give his side the lead with 20 minutes left when
Crichton superbly tipped his shot round the post for a corner.
French striker Libbra put aside his disciplinary woes to give Norwich a
half-time lead.
Libbra was this week slapped with a three-game ban by the Football Association
after being found guilty of misconduct following an incident with Birmingham's
Darren Purse in December.
He kept his place, with on-loan Trevor Benjamin relegated to the bench, and
repaid manager Nigel Worthington with a goal on the stroke of half-time.
Libbra, who earlier wasted a chance when he put a left-foot volley wide from
the edge of the box, made no mistake with his second opportunity from Steen
Nedergaard's cross to score only his seventh goal of the season.
But Coventry were back on level terms from the penalty spot with Hughes,
subject of an audacious attempt by former club West Brom to take him back on
loan, making no mistake.
Having survived a large spell of Coventry pressure, Norwich could have nicked
victory 10 minutes from time through Libbra and Benjamin.
Libbra's shot was saved by Sweden international goalkeeper Magnus Hedman, who
then needed to pull off a fantastic save to deny Benjamin, an early second-half
substitute for David Nielsen, who unleashed an 18-yard piledriver.
It appeared both sides would have to settle for a point until Hughes' late
show.
