COVENTRY CITY REPORTS 2001-2002

Coventry 2 Rotherham 0

Goals by defender Mo Konjic and striker Lee Hughes in the last 12 minutes of brought Coventry their first home win since Christmas.

But for the first hour Rotherham did well enough to suggest that they might leave Highfield Road with a share of the spoils.

Coventry moved up a gear after a disappointing first-half performance and twice hit the Rotherham woodwork as they went in search of a winner.

In the 68th minute David Thompson floated a corner kick to the far post from where Lee Mills headed against the crossbar and defender Calum Davenport put the rebound wide.

Then four minutes later Thompson tried a snap-shot which struck the base of an upright.

Coventry had initially left Hughes on the bench but he came on to replace Jay Bothroyd in the 62nd minute.

He should have scored 14 minutes later when Coventry goalkeeper Magnus Hedman fired the ball upfield and United stopper Michael Pollitt collided with defender Martin McIntosh on the edge of the penalty area.

It gave Hughes a clear run on goal but he chose to cut back inside allowing Pollitt time to recover his ground and make the save.

But the Sky Blues did go in front in the 78th minute when centre-back Konjic powered past two defenders and hammered in a shot which Pollitt could only parry at the near post.

Hughes put the rebound against the crossbar but Konjic then flung himself full length to head the second rebound into the net.

Hughes secured the points in the third minute of stoppage time when Pollitt fumbled a 25-yard shot from on-loan midfielder Colin Healy and the striker was on hand to whip the ball into the roof of the net.

Lee Carsley, a target by Everton this week, was missing from the Coventry line-up but club officials said he was resting at home suffering from influenza.

Everton had a £1.5million bid for the Irish midfielder rejected at the weekend but are expected to make an improved offer.
