Hull striker Fraizer Campbell celebrated his first England Under-21 call-up with a fine brace as the Tigers beat 10-man Colchester in their Coca-Cola Championship clash at Layer Road.
Campbell took advantage of a fumble by goalkeeper Dean Gerken to smash in an early goal before latching on to Henrik Pedersen's cross to grab a second.
Kevin Lisbie drove in a fine strike for the Championship's bottom side to give them hope of a comeback but substitute Caleb Folan struck late on as Phil Brown's side held on for a win which lifted them level with West Brom in fourth place in the table.
Campbell has now plundered seven goals in his last nine appearances and his performance capped a fine day that began with a place in Stuart Pearce's squad to face Poland next week.
Campbell - on loan from Manchester United - was on the end of some early rough treatment from the Us defenders and was involved in the sending-off of Phil Ifil after only 14 minutes.
Adam Virgo had already been booked for a hefty challenge on Campbell before Ifil was shown a straight red card by referee Pat Miller two minutes later for a trip on the pacy striker.
Campbell scored in the 20th minute at the second attempt after Gerken failed to hold his low shot from the edge of the area.
Hull were dominant and doubled their lead in the 33rd minute with another clinical strike.
Pedersen's cross from the left was brought down by Campbell and he effortlessly sent another left-footed drive across Gerken and into the far corner.
The hosts appeared to have a mountain to climb but Lisbie gave them hope with an excellent finish in the 37th minute.
Johnnie Jackson broke down the left before teeing up Lisbie on the edge of the area and the former Charlton man buried a sweet strike past Boaz Myhill.
The second half struggled to match the excitement of the opening 45 minutes with Ian Ashbee testing Gerken with a low drive from the edge of the box in the first moment of danger.
Left-back Andy Dawson then thought he had sealed the win with a dipping free-kick but again Gerken was equal to the effort and managed to turn it around the post.
Folan came on for veteran Dean Windass with 20 minutes remaining and sealed the win in the 87th minute.
Dean Marney picked out an intricate pass from the centre circle to send the former Wigan man clear and he kept his cool to round Gerken and roll home into an empty net.
