Bristol City were dumped out of the Carling Cup as League One Carlisle won at Ashton Gate for the first time in 38 years.

Second-half goals from Scott Dobie and Gary Madine put the Cumbrians through to the third round, beating a toothless City side who lost their 100 per cent home record this season.

Tom Taiwo hit a post in the first half for the visitors, who were impressive in the second half and deserved their first away victory over Championship outfit City since 1971.

City saw plenty of the ball early on but struggled to forge goalscoring opportunities and Carlisle almost snatched the opening goal after 18 minutes.

Matty Robson floated a cross to the far post and defender David Raven ghosted into the area and scuffed a first-time shot which bounced into the ground and drifted over the crossbar.

That chance appeared to give the visitors confidence and they had another opportunity three minutes later when the ball fell to on-loan Chelsea midfielder Taiwo 12 yards from goal, but his tame left-footed strike failed to test City goalkeeper Dean Gerken.

Gary Johnson's side responded and it took a fine saving tackle from Danny Livesey to deny Danny Haynes as the striker raced towards goal.

But it was Carlisle's on-loan midfielder Taiwo who came closest in the first half when his curled, left-footed effort from 25 yards rattled the post with Gerken beaten.

The Cumbrians asked more questions of the City defence early in the second half, with Peter Murphy and the impressive former Robins midfielder Joe Anyinsah having opportunities to break the deadlock.

And United were in front on the hour mark when Kevan Hurst whipped over a cross from the left and Dobie got in front of his marker and slotted home from close range.

Dobie could have added a second goal three minutes later but flashed his right-footed finish wastefully wide from 15 yards out.

Robins defender Jamie McCombe came off the bench to play as a makeshift striker and he missed a chance to equalise with 20 minutes left, spooning his finish over the bar.

And City were hit with a sucker punch 13 minutes from time when the impressive Anyinsah set up Madine, who beat Gerken with an emphatic finish from 12 yards out.
