Bristol City scraped through to the second round of the Carling Cup with a 1-0 victory over Coca-Cola League One side Brentford.
Nicky Maynard scored the only goal of an entertaining cup tie just before the hour-mark, but City had to survive some concerted pressure from the hosts and the sending off of striker Danny Haynes.
The young forward was dismissed six minutes into the second half for bringing down Ryan Dickson having already been booked for dissent.
But City took the lead seven minutes later when Brentford failed to deal with a cross and Maynard headed in after Liam Fontaine put the ball back in.
Brentford, though, will wonder how they failed to take the tie to extra time at least.
Sam Saunders headed a Sam Wood cross against the bar and forced Dean Gerken into a trio of fine saves.
And Steve Kabba missed the best chance of the lot when he raced clear of Fontaine and rounded Gerken but slipped as he went to shoot and screwed the effort wide.
