Barnsley banished their away-day blues and became the first team into the draw for the FA Cup fifth round after a deserved victory at Southend.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce scored the only goal of the game on his return to Roots Hall as the Tykes secured only their second win on the road this season.
Campbell-Ryce, who spent last season with the Coca-Cola League One side before moving to Oakwell in the summer, netted after 22 minutes with a fine 20-yard strike.
But it was goalkeeper Heinz Muller who caught the eye with a dazzling display throughout to help the Coca-Cola Championship outfit progress.
The German denied Tommy Black on numerous occasions and turned in an inspired second-half performance to further frustrate the Shrimpers.
Victory was Barnsley's first away win since the 3-2 success at Southampton in September and boss Simon Davey will now be hoping to land a money-spinning tie in the next round.
Injuries to key players forced home boss Steve Tilson to deploy Gary Hooper and Black as a makeshift attack while on-loan Tottenham striker Lee Barnard started on the bench after joining the club only a matter of hours before kick-off.
Daniel Nardiello slotted straight into the Barnsley side after rejoining the club on loan from QPR on Thursday, and the former Manchester United trainee was in the thick of the action from the first whistle.
He fired wide from the edge of the penalty area with five minutes played and then had a goal-bound effort blocked by Adam Barrett as his early running caused the hosts countless problems.
Tykes goalkeeper Muller has hit the headlines numerous times this season following a string of impressive displays and he saved well from Simon Francis moments before Campbell-Ryce put the visitors ahead in style after 22 minutes.
The Jamaica international turned his marker out on the left flank before cutting in and arrowing a 20-yard shot into goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan's top left-hand corner.
Davey's Barnsley side were unfortunate not to double their lead four minutes later as Flahavan kept out Dennis Souza's close-range header.
On the stroke of half-time, Hooper fired straight at Muller from six yards with the goal at his mercy to ensure Barnsley went in ahead at the interval.
Muller continued to frustrate the home side after the restart as the German stopper denied Black from 18 yards before Brian Howard and Rohan Ricketts both blazed wide from just outside the area at the other end.
Alan McCormack dragged wide on the hour as Southend showed signs of a possible comeback.
Muller then showed incredible athleticism to pull off two saves in barely 20 seconds.
He first turned behind Black's rasping 12-yard drive and from the resulting Steven Hammell corner was on hand to keep out Barrett's powered header.
Substitute Kayode Odejayi nearly made a telling impact following his introduction for the striker saw his 18-yard shot blocked Barrett as the home side ran the risk of getting caught on the break.
Howard, Lewis Hunt and Peter Clarke all spurned late chances but the Tykes hung on for victory.
