JACKSON'S STRIDES OUT FOR GOLD
By Ian Gordon, PA Sport, Munich
Colin Jackson roared to a fourth successive European Championships 110metres
hurdles victory to complete a quickfire golden double for Britain in Munich
on Saturday.
The 35-year-old triumphed just minutes after triple jumper Ashia Hansen had
snatched victory with her final effort to take Britain's gold tally to five.
Jackson became the second Brit to win four European titles in a row joining
Steve Backley who achieved the feat in the javelin yesterday.
Jackson had promised to claim gold after being beaten into second place in the
Commonwealth Games in Manchester and he duly delivered.
The Welshman, in the last outdoor championships, triumphed in 13.11 secs to
claim the 25th major medal of his glittering carrer.
Latvia's Stanislavs Olijars was second in 13.22 with Poland's Artur Kohutek
third in 13.32.
"Before the race I was on the training track and feeling absolutely no
pressure whatsoever," said Jackson. "I was laughing and joking with my coach
Malcolm Arnold and not giving a single thought to the the possibility of a
fourth European gold medal.
"It never entered my head. Malcolm simply told me to stay relaxed and be
prepared for anything.
"What happened to me at the Commonwealth Games when I clattered the first
hurdle and spoiled my chance of gold was a one-in-150 times occurrence.
"It was a complete one-off. There was no chance of that ever happening again
here. Malcolm's instructions were to pop over the first hurdle as quickly as
possible then do the same at the last.
"I got such a super start I was able to follow his plan to the letter, then
it was all pretty straight forward."
