DEVONISH GRABS BRONZE FOR BRITAIN
By Ian Gordon, PA Sport, Munich
Marlon Devonish grabbed bronze for Britain as Greece's Konstantinos Kenteris
shattered the European Championship 200 metres record in Munich's Olympic
Stadium on Friday.
Coventry runner Devonish finished in 20.21 seconds to just edge out team-mate
Christian Malcolm who was fourth in a season's-best 20.30secs.
World and Olympic champion Kenteris added the European title and shattered the
record of 20.11secs set by Britain's John Regis in Split 12 years ago with
victory in 19.85secs.
Portugal's Nigerian-born Francis Obikwelu added to his 100m silver with
another second spot in a time of 20.21.
Devonish's bronze was the fifth in succession won by British athletes and took
their medal haul to nine - two gold, one silver and six bronze.
The 26-year-old has often been in the shadows of the likes of Dwain Chambers,
Mark Lewis-Francis and Darren Campbell but has begun to emerge from it this
season.
But there was no way Devonish was going to stop Kenteris - or Kederis as he
was know last year - completing the hat-trick of 200m titles.
The bronze adds to the silver he won behind Frankie Fredericks at the
Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
Welshman Malcolm, who finished eighth in the Games, almost grabbed bronze
after a season in which he was hit by a virus and a hamstring problem.
