Terry Jenkins suffered another surprise first-round exit at the Ladbrokes.com World Championship after being upset 3-1 by Dennis Smith.
'The Bull' became the latest seed to exit the Alexandra Palace as he failed to find his form against the resurgent Smith.
Unable to either score heavily or hit doubles, Jenkins soon found himself two sets down, only to find form in the third with 118 and 107 outshots getting him back in touch.
That form deserted him in the next, though, and 'Smiffy' capitalised by hitting 84, ironically finishing with the bull, to put out the man they call 'The Bull'.
Kevin Painter, runner-up in 2004, was pushed all the way before he prevailed a 3-2 winner over Matt Clark.
'The Artist' became the first-top 16 seed to secure his place in round two, but was given a huge scare by Clark.
With the scores locked at two sets all and two legs apiece, Painter missed double 16 allowing Clark one dart at double 12 to win the match.
However 'Superman' was off target and Painter stepped up to wipe out double eight and he will now face Spanish qualifier Carlos Rodriguez.
Dennis Priestley made light work of disposing of New Zeland No 1 Warren French as the former world champion powered to a comfortable 3-0 win.
Despite only averaging 87, Priestley had far too much class for 'The Frog' and will return to Alexandra Palace after the Christmas break.
The final game of the afternoon session saw Welshman Barrie Bates cruise to an impressive 3-0 win over Felix McBrearty.
'Champagne', who reached the last 16 of the competition last year, scored highly throughout the match and took out the doubles with minimum fuss to secure his passage in round two.
Chinese number one Shi Yongsheng earned a place in the first round against Mervyn King after beating Austrian Hannes Schnier 6-4.
'The Rock' Schnier scored more heavily but missed 25 shots at doubles and Yongsheng took full advantage to win their preliminary round battle.
