Lloyd went into the 2007 PDC World Championship as the No 1 seed, but goes into this event 12th in the Order of Merit.

And the Essex boy has hardly set the world on fire with his performances in the PDC's elite competition, with his best effort coming back in 2002 when he reached the semi-finals.

Two years ago the former builder exited in the first-round stage to the unheralded Gary Welding while last time around he went out just one game further in, albeit to eventual winner Raymond van Barneveld.

But maybe the change to the Alexandra Palace will benefit Lloyd as he certainly has the talent to trouble the best in the world, as he showed with a run to the semi-finals of the UK Open earlier this year.

The man they call 'Jaws' (on account of his jagged nashers) won the World Grand Prix in 2004 and the World Matchplay the following year but his form since has been inconsistent.
