Regarded by Phil Taylor as his toughest opponent, Priestley showed his trademark tenacity when he vowed that his recent diagnosis of prostate cancer would not sidetrack him.
And the sheer volume of well-wishers who flooded Priestley's website in the wake of his diagnosis confirmed his status as one of the most popular players in the game.
Dennis the Menace - he even sports red and black hooped shirts - won the inaugural PDC title back in 1994 and is also a former winner of the BDO title.
His best days saw him produce a fine rivalry with Taylor in the 1990s, but while those are now probably behind him, he did roll back the years to reach the Premier League semi-finals thanks in part to a win over Raymond van Barneveld.
That proved the Yorkshireman remains a threat to any player on his day and with the vocal 'Mexborough Mafia' on his side, no-one will relish being pitted against him.
