Priestley won the inaugural PDC title back in 1994 and is also a former winner of the BDO title.
His best days saw him produce a fine rivalry with Phil Taylor in the 1990s, but those now appear to be behind him although his standing as the world's number three player at the age of 56 is a testament to his durability.
The Yorkshireman remains a threat to any player on his day, as Taylor found out in a hotly-contested match at this year's World Matchplay, and has recently taken to the gym in an attempt to increase his stamina for big tournaments.
A semi-finalist at the World Grand Prix earlier this season, Priestley will harbour hopes of a decent run in this event.
Nicknamed 'The Menace', Priestley can usually be found sporting his distinctive red and black hooped shirts and usually has the vocal backing of the 'Mexborough Mafia'.
