Roland Scholten completed the second-round action at the Ladbrokes.com World Championship on Wednesday night with a dramatic victory entirely in keeping with the 15 previous matches at this stage.
Round two at the Circus Tavern this year has produced some of the most thrilling and highest-quality contests in the tournament's 14-year history, nine of the 16 going to a deciding set.
That was the case again as fourth seed Scholten squeezed through a sudden-death leg against Alex Roy, who put up one of his best performances since bursting onto the scene in 2000.
It was nip and tuck all the way with neither man able to claim a two-set advantage, and just when it looked as though the Dutchman was gaining the upper hand his opponent hit back impressively.
Three attempts at the bullseye were needed to determine who threw first in the deciding leg with Roy winning the honour, although it quickly became irrelevant as his opponent scored heavier.
Scholten's Achilles heel struck again, however, as he missed two darts at double 18, but the Roy, from Watford, gave him another chance by squandering two opportunities on double 15.
The man from The Hague needed no further invitations to wrap it up and hit double nine to secure a meeting with Colin Osborne, a 4-2 winner against Wes Newton.
Osborne's victory was one of the more straightforward of the second round, as was Andy Jenkins' who reached the third round of a World Championship for the first time with a 4-2 triumph against Andy Smith.
