The five-time world champion fell 2-0 behind at the start of the contest but scraped home in the third leg before going on to turn the tables on the local favourite.

"I believe I am better in the knockout (format). Groups are hard for everyone, if you win your first two group matches like Simon Whitlock did, you think you're there but you have to win that third game also," Van Barneveld told Sky Sports.

"Because if you don't and you get beat big time - like 5-1 or 5-2 - you are still out of the competition. I lost yesterday so I was all focused to win my game today.

"(In the knockout format) winning means you go through and that's better than depending on what the other result is."

Elsewhere, John Part beat Tony O'Shea 5-4 in a straight shootout for a place in the knockout stages, the Lakeside finalist missing a match dart at the bull before his Canadian opponent took out 72 in the deciding leg.

Part finished top of Group E as Gary Anderson was beaten 5-4 by Adrian Lewis, who took out a finish of 147 in the process of putting a consolation victory on the board.

Brendan Dolan defeated Barrie Bates 5-0 to qualify from Group F, while Paul Nicholson was eliminated after suffering a 5-4 loss to Andy Hamilton.

In Group G, Wesley Harms beat Martin Phillips 5-2 to qualify, with Wes Newton winning the group after securing a 5-2 win over Terry Jenkins, who was eliminated.
