The Dutchman has enjoyed a stellar season and arrives at Ally Pally on the back of victory at the World Grand Prix, a run to the final of the Grand Slam of Darts and seven ProTour titles.

His first-round opponent will be Paul Lim, who hit the first televised nine-darter at the World Championship in 1990, or Mohd Latif Sapup and van Gerwen is ready.

"I've had a very good year and feel very confident," van Gerwen told

"It's all about the confidence. The confidence is there at the moment but it needs to stay there and I hope I can do that as that's very important.

"I want to keep it going and I'm not at the top yet."

Van Gerwen wants at least a run to the quarter-finals in North London after reaching the last 16 in the previous edition of the tournament.

Simon Whitlock sent 'Mighty Mike' packing after the 23-year-old battled back from 3-0 down to level at 3-3 before falling to defeat in the deciding set.

That match is still in the Dutchman's memory but the attention is now on the next few weeks of darting action.

"I didn't do that bad (last year) but I was a bit unlucky with the draw," he added.

"Last year I beat Colin Osborne and Mervyn King but then lost to Simon Whitlock. I was 3-0 down but had a good comeback to get to 3-3 before he had an amazing seventh set.

"I was happy with that one and winning some games there has given me a little bit of confidence.

"This year I want a better result and to show everyone what I can do. I want a minimum of the quarter-finals and then we will see what happens."
