South Africa's World Cup fall-out continued on
Saturday with the resignation of former national spin bowler Pat Symcox as a
national selector.
Symcox submitted his resignation letter to the United Cricket Board, citing a
conflict of interests between his position as a national selector and position
as a cricket commentator, journalist and website host.
His resignation followed the retirement of fast bowler Allan Donald and
expected retirement of Gary Kirsten from international cricket.
"I wish to emphasise I resign as a national selector neither in a fit of
pique nor as a result of any dissatisfaction with the UCBSA or South African
cricket in general," Symcox said in his letter.
"I am forced to make a choice as a result of a conflict of interests, which
has a negative impact on my source of income and earning capacity as
bread-winner for my family."
Symcox also emphasised: "I am most certainly available to assist within South
African cricket and will gladly do so if called upon, as long as I do not find
myself again in a situation where my interests are in conflict."
National selection convenor Omar Henry said: "'Symmo' has played a huge role
on the selection panel and still has a lot to contribute to South African
cricket. I will miss him."
Hosts South Africa were eliminated from the World Cup when their final Pool B
match against Sri Lanka was declared a tie under the Duckworth-Lewis method due
to rain. They had needed to win to go through to the Super Six.
