Shaun Pollock was on Saturday sacked as captain of South Africa following their exit
from the World Cup.
Pollock, 29, took over the leadership of his country from the late Hansie
Cronje in the middle of 2000.
However, on recommendation of the selectors and national cricket committee,
the United Cricket Board of South Africa ended his tenure shy of a three-year
reign.
The former Warwickshire all-rounder's successor - one of his first
assignment's is this summer's tour of England - will be named on Sunday.
"Shaun is a very valuable member of the national squad and is one of the
world's best all-rounders. He will continue to play a vital role," said UCB
chief executive Gerald Majola.
Pollock appears to have paid the price for South Africa's failure to navigate
the first round of the World Cup.
They lost to West Indies and New Zealand in Pool B matches before a
miscalculation on the Duckworth-Lewis target for victory over Sri Lanka at
Durban cost the hosts a Super Sixes place.
When rain fell with five overs remaining in the contest, the South Africans
believed they had done enough to win - but their 229 for six meant the scores
were level and the match finished in a tie.
