Vasbert Drakes claimed a five-wicket haul to send Kenya spiralling to a
142-run defeat against West Indies in Kimberley.
Drakes finished with figures of five for 33 from his 10 overs as Kenya,
chasing an unlikely victory target of 247, were bowled out for 104 in 35.5
overs.
Drakes was on a hat-trick after dismissing Brijal Patel and Hitesh Modi with
the last two balls of his seventh over but the first ball of his next over was
hit for four through midwicket by Kenya skipper Steve Tikolo.
Nevertheless it was Drake's second five-wicket haul of the tournament and his
total of 16 wickets, made him joint highest wicket-taker alongside Sri Lanka's
Chaminda Vaas whose tournament is not over.
Chris Gayle's 119 enabled West Indies to post a total of 246 for seven and
Drakes wasted no time ripping the heart out of the Kenyan reply.
Kenya, already through to the Super Six, were hoping for a win which would
enable them to top Pool B but looked like having to settle for second place.
Wicketkeeper batsmen Kennedy Otieno had made only three when he top-edged a
lifting delivery from Drakes and Mervyn Dillon took the catch at long leg.
Kenya were eight for one after four overs with Ravindu Shah joined by Patel.
Shah was the next to perish in the ninth over, edging Dillon to first slip
where Gayle claimed the catch at the second attempt.
Tikolo joined Patel with Kenya facing an uphill task and two quick wickets
left the minnows staring down the barrel.
Patel departed for 11, his lofted off drive going straight to Brian Lara at
cover leaving Kenya 34 for three.
The very next ball Modi got an edge and Ridley Jacobs claimed the catch.
Tikolo and Maurice Odumbe were left with a repair job but Drakes struck again
trapping Tikolo leg before for 12 and the Kenyans were in disarray at 43 for
five.
Odumbe fell victim to Jermaine Lawson for a duck when he stepped back into his
own wickets.
And 43 for six became 54 for seven when David Obuya departed for four, Ricardo
Powell taking the catch to give Drakes his fifth wicket.
Collins Obuya became Lawson's second victim when he fell to a Powell catch for
13 and Kenya were 62 for eight.
Peter Ongondo and Martin Suji put on 40 for the ninth wicket before Powell
bowled the former.
And Suji was the last wicket to fall, caught in the deep by Chanderpaul off
Wavell Hinds for 30.
Mervyn Dillon finished with three for 37 off his 10 overs but Drakes had been
Kenya's chief destroyer.
Earlier Gayle had patiently held together the West Indies innings while
wickets fell at the other end, and, once he had completed his century, he opened
up with a brief flurry of big hits.
Gayle, who eventually fell for 119 - including eight fours and two sixes -
when David Obuya held on to his lofted drive off Joseph Angara had strong
support from Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the pair putting on 122 for the opening
wicket, before Chanderpaul departed for 66, top edging Collins Obuya with Angara
taking the catch.
Chanderpaul apart there was not much more support for Gayle with Brian Lara,
Marlon Samuels, Ricardo Powell and Carl Hooper falling cheaply.
