POLLOCK PRAISES PROTEAS
South Africa mauled Bangladesh by 10 wickets with 38 overs to spare in
Bloemfontein - but their captain Shaun Pollock still saw room for
improvement.
Pollock could afford a light-hearted response after openers Gary Kirsten
(52no) and Herschelle Gibbs (49no) had blasted their way past Bangladesh's
inadequate 108 all out in the World Cup Pool B tie.
It was a highly satisfactory result which kept alive the South Africans' dream
of winning the competition for the first time on their home patch.
Asked whether he was happy with Kirsten and Gibbs' strike-rate, which finished
the match off in only 12 overs of the South Africa innings, Pollock said: "We
were aiming for 11 - but it just went a bit over."
Pollock could hardly find much to criticise following a demolition job on the
outclassed minnows, whose innings was eroded by man-of-the-match Makhaya Ntini's
return of four for 24.
"It all went to plan," he told Sky Sports.
"I thought we bowled well - and then to knock the runs off in that fashion
was great, and great entertainment for the crowd."
Pollock's opposite number Khaled Mashud was left to reflect on yet another
defeat for his over-faced team.
He admitted: "We struggled with the bat early on, and it was difficult for
us.
"I think we were playing too many shots against their opening bowlers. We can
do much better."
