With the ball he proved both miserly and naggingly accurate and did not let himself down on the occasions when he was promoted in the order.

There is no doubt Irani was the form all-rounder of last year.

But his recent VB struggles have cast doubt over whether or not he can maintain such a high standard.

England have tried several bits-and-pieces all-rounders in recent years without finding one that can consistently deliver.

Irani must now grab his chance.
