The flamboyant left-hander played some match-winning knocks in the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 1999 and won a place in the national side for the 2000 ICC Knockout Tournament in Nairobi.
Success there against Australia (84) and South Africa (41) won his captain's confidence.
His fearless style of batting, useful left-arm slow bowling and brilliant fielding are invaluable.
