The most eligible bachelor of the Indian squad, who over the past six years has emerged as arguably his country's premier batsman in both forms of the game.
Needed nine Tests to score his first century, against South Africa on the 1996-97 tour.
But a century in each innings of a Test (190 and 103) in New Zealand in 1999 changed the course of his career.
Later that year he was voted the player of the World Cup in England, scoring 461 runs at an average of 65.86.
