India had long since been regarded a soft touch in international cricket circles, the sort of side that would buckle under the merest hint of pressure.
Until, that was, Ganguly took charge.
The 'Prince of Calcutta' has instilled an unwavering sense of belief in his players, as exemplified by the NatWest Series final victory over England when they recovered from the depths of 146 for five to reach their target of 326 with three balls to spare.
On the tour to England Ganguly proved he is a master motivator, defying those who claimed his aloofness would make him an unsuitable captain.
A fine and then a ban in the space of a week last year for using foul and abusive language, though hardly the actions of a responsible leader, at least served to highlight his fierce passion.
