CRICKET WORLD CUP PAKISTAN
Picture Waqar Younis - determined and durable. (Allsport)

WAQAR YOUNIS

Born: 16.11.71
One-day internationals: 256
Batting: Right Hand (Avge: 10.57)
Bowling: Right Hand Fast (Avge: 23.81)
Catches: 18

It speaks volumes for Waqar's determination and durability that he remains at the forefront of Pakistani cricket more than 13 years after his arrival on the international scene.

Though the trademark searing pace which bruised stumps and batsmen's toes in equal measure during the early part of his career has been eroded by the passage of time, few captains boast a better tactical awareness and feel for the game than Waqar.

His achievements - which have come largely as a result of an almost freakish ability to exact prodigious reverse swing with the old ball - may have been tarnished by accusations of ball-tampering, but there is no higher accolade than the fact he is still regarded by his opponents as one of the most feared bowlers in the world.

Any batsman expecting an ageing warhorse to come trundling to the crease during the World Cup would be wise to remember that Waqar averages a wicket every five overs in one-day internationals.
