England are out of the World Cup after rain washed out Zimbabwe's clash with
Pakistan.
England needed Pakistan to beat the tournament co-hosts in Bulawayo in the
final Pool A to stand any chance of progressing but the weather scuppered their
hopes.
The teams endured a stop-start morning with Pakistan reaching 73 for three
from 14 overs before rain intervened for a third and final time.
The two points available for the abandoned game meant that Zimbabwe qualified
in third place from Pool A, condemning England and Pakistan to an early flight
home.
Australia and India had already qualified from the group.
The abandoned game means England, who forfeited their match in Zimbabwe, go out
after the group stages for the second tournament in succession.
The odds always seemed against a result as the start in Bulawayo was delayed
for over an hour.
Just 1.3 overs were then possible before the rain returned although that
provided enough time for Doug Hondo to trap Salim Elahi leg before after
Pakistan had won the toss and elected to bat.
The game limped along in between the showers although Saeed Anwar managed to
club his way to an unbeaten 40 from 44 balls.
He shared in a stand of 51 with Yousuf Youhana before his partner edged behind
to Tatenda Taibu off Heath Streak after making 17.
Anwar survived one scare when he skied a leg-side clip off Streak but Sean
Ervine failed to grasp a steepling chance running away at midwicket.
Inzamam-ul-Haq, however, was not so fortunate as he attempted a similar shot
off Ervine's bowling but found only a diving Guy Whittall in the deep.
It proved Inzamam's final contribution of a miserable World Cup.
Younis Khan came in next but he had little opportunity to trouble the scorers
before rain halted proceedings.
