Kenya overcame a nervous final hour to record their first win of the 2003
World Cup when they beat Canada in Cape Town on Saturday.
Chasing 198 for victory, Kenya were cruising at 116 for two in the 31st over,
but they lost regular wickets and needed a 38-run partnership for the sixth
wicket between Thomas Odoyo (27) and Peter Ondongo (16) to put them back on
course.
Odoyo and Ondongo carried the Kenyans to within eight runs of victory before
Ondongo was bowled by Austin Codrington leaving Odoyo and Collins Obuya to
complete the win.
Ravindu Shah, who topscored for India against the South Africans on Wednesday
with 60, was again his side's most effective player with the bat.
He made 61 off 94 balls (nine fours) to anchor the first half of the Kenya
innings.
He and captain Steve Tikolo's second-wicket partnership of 84 set up the win
for the east Africans.
Tikolo scored an entertaining and fluent 46 off 49 balls (six fours) before he
was adjudged leg before from the bowling of John Davison.
The Canadian off-spinner struck another blow to the Kenyan cause when he got
the wicket of Maurice Odumbe.
Odumbe had hit a quickfire 26 off 19 balls before he also went out lbw.
Davison also got the wicket of Hitesh Modi, who struggled for 49 balls to get to
six.
Davison finished with the incredible figures of three for 15 off his 10
overs.
Canada recovered from a slow start to post 197 and the backbone of their
innings was provided by middle order batsman Ian Billcliff.
Billcliff came to the wicket at 47 for two, and although he took a long time
to get going, he hit some massive blows later in the innings to generate
Canadian momentum.
Billcliff's 71 came off 100 balls, included eight fours and two sixes, and the
benefit of his first-class cricket in New Zealand was evident.
Canada made a relatively calm start with openers John Davison and Ishwar Maraj
surviving the first five overs of the match without much bother.
Opening bowlers Martin Suji and Odoyo maintained a good length throughout
their opening spells and gave the Canadians very little to hit.
Odoyo finished with four for 28 from his 10 overs.
Davison continued to play well and hit two sixes - one a massive straight hit
off Odoyo - before losing his wicket to Obuya with the score on 47.
When Desmond Chumney went out one run later, Canada were in danger of losing
their way but Billcliff and captain Joseph Harris steadied the batting effort.
The two shared in an 86-run partnership. It did take 27 overs however as the
two players made sure that they did not lose any other quick wickets.
The partnership was ended when Harris was brilliantly caught by all-rounder
Tony Suji and Billcliff followed soon after when he was bowled by the same
player with the score on 158.
But the Canadians did not buckle immediately and managed to take the score
within a whisker of 200 before being bowled out off the final ball of the 49th
over.
