South African all-rounder Lance Klusener showed a different side to his
explosive abilities by taking four wickets and setting up an emphatic 10-wicket
victory for his side against Kenya in their World Cup Pool B game against
Kenya.
Klusener hit a purple patch with the ball and grabbed four for 16 in his
eight-over spell to help skittle the Tuskers out for 140 in just 38 overs and
set up an easy victory target to chase.
The victory was then ensured by South African opening batsmen Gary Kirsten and
Herschelle Gibbs, who reached the target of 141 with ease in just 21.2 overs as
Gibbs rattled up 87 off 66 balls and Kirsten added 52 from 63 balls to belt the
East Africans all over the park.
The openers incredibly scored 98 of their runs in boundaries, with Gibbs
smashing 12 fours and four sixes while Kirsten was rather subdued with his nine
fours.
Gibbs in particular took spin bowler Collins Obuya to task, hitting him for
two fours and two sixes in one over.
But the total could have been a lot lower had it not been for five dropped
catches from the normally sound South African fielding side.
The Proteas looked well in control of the match from the beginning after
removing opener Kennedy Obuya, Brijal Patel and captain Steve Tikolo early on to
leave the Tuskers at seven for two and latterly 26 for three.
Opener Kennedy Obuya, though, played a major part in his own downfall when he
was run out by Gibbs after a terrible mix up off the bowling of Makhaya Ntini.
Partner Ravindu Shah blocked forward and called 'no' to Obuya, who had already
sped halfway down the wicket. He slipped when trying to turn and watched as
Ntini ducked to give Gibbs a clear line of sight to strike the stumps.
Patel followed soon after, grabbing only a single before getting a faint glove
off South Africa captain Shaun Pollock's bowling to send the ball through to
Mark Boucher for an easy catch.
Tikolo had accumulated three runs when he tried to hit over the top, only to
mistime his shot and be caught at mid-on by an airborne Kirsten to give Pollock
his second wicket.
Shah was the most composed of the Kenyan batsman and seemed to play the South
African bowlers with ease.
He carted Jacques Kallis around the park to see the South African
all-rounder's figures return nought for 23 off his three overs.
But then Proteas captain Pollock introduced Nicky Boje to the attack and the
spinner got immediate success.
Hitesh Modi paddled the ball around to leg gully straight back to Pollock, who
scooped up the catch to send the batsman back for nine and leave Kenya at 62 for
four.
South Africa removed the main threat of Shah at the start of the 26th over to
leave Kenya in trouble at 92 for five following a brilliant piece of fielding by
Klusener.
Klusener sent in a lightning throw from the boundary to Boje, who broke the
stumps with Shah a centimetre short for a third umpire decision which sent
Kenya's dangerman back to the pavilion.
Shah scored a composed 60 off 87 balls with seven boundaries after being the
mainstay as his top-order team-mates crumbled around him.
Maurice Odumbe was dropped by Jonty Rhodes after giving a sharp chance on 15,
but departed one run later when he was caught by Gibbs off Klusener for 16.
Collins Obuya went one ball later when he was caught leg before to leave the
South African all-rounder on a hat-trick.
Martin Suji survived the pressure ball, but then gave a thick glove to be
caught by Pollock off Klusener at short fine leg the next over.
Peter Ongongo joined Odumbe and proceeded to last out at the bowling attack,
swashbuckling a few boundaries before Ongongo tried his arm once too often and
was caught by Kirsten on the long on boundary for 13.
Thomas Odoyo rode his luck, being dropped twice in consecutive balls off the
bowling of Ntini by Pollock - first skying a ball behind the wicketkeeper and
the second a regulation catch at first slip.
Finally, Ntini got his man however as Odoyo skied the ball high to be caught
by Boucher for a sparkling 22 off 41 balls.
South Africa pick up their first four points in the competition and next face
New Zealand at The Wanderers on Sunday in a crucial game for both sides.
