  • Powerplay overs in red.

New Zealand (363 for five) beat Canada (249 for nine) by 114 runs with 0.4 overs remaining

A thorough performance from the New Zealanders and and admirable batting effort from Canada. A nice send off for Canadian coach Andy Pick in his last match at the helm.

    Over 49.2:
    Canada 249/9 (RR: 5.04): Cummins 9* (8)

The injured Dhaniram will not come out to bat again so that is the end of the match.

    H Osinde b Patel 0 (1)

Patel gets his second wicket in two balls as Osinde plays right over a straight one and is clean bowled.

Henry Osinde is the last man in.

Canada need 119 runs to win from 2 overs at 59.50 runs per over.

Kevin Sandher is the new man in.

    WICKET
    U Bhatti b Patel 10 (28)

Bhatti and Cummins resist the urge to go after the spinner for the majority of the over but then the urge is too great for Bhatti - he goes down on one knee, swings across the line hoping to connect something of a slog-sweep but is clean bowled.

Patel back in the attack too.

Over 47: Mason returns with an indifferent over dotted with extras. Bhattin and Cummins fail to middle a couple of lusty blows but scrape together some bonus singles here and there.
    Canada 243/6 (RR: 5.17): Bhatti 10* (25), Cummins 6* (4)
Canada need 121 runs to win from 3 overs at 40.33 runs per over.

    Mason back in the attack.

Over 46: Bhatti thumps a short one through covers for four, gathers a single down the ground and leaves Cummins to slash the last ball of the over through point for another four (Cummins off the mark). This is now Canada's highest score ever in a World Cup match.
    Canada 235/6 (RR: 5.10): Bhatti 6* (20), Cummins 4* (2)
Canada need 129 runs to win from 4 overs at 32.25 runs per over.

Over 45: Oram concedes a single and a leg-bye and 'gets rid of' Dhaniram with an accidental full toss which nails Dhaniram on the glove. Ouch! he has to retire hurt and Anderson Cummins comes to the crease and sees off the last ball of the over. Poor Dhaniram, he was looking good out there. Doubt he will be back.
    Canada 226/6 (RR: 5.02): Bhatti 1* (15), Cummins 0* (1)
Canada need 138 runs to win from 5 overs at 27.60 runs per over.

Over 44: Dhaniram should perhaps bat higher in the order as he drives McMillan through the covers really confidently. He gathers another single after the boundary and Bhatti plays out three more dot balls.
    Canada 224/6 (RR: 5.09): Bhatti 1* (14), Dhaniram 16* (15)
Canada need 140 runs to win from 6 overs at 23.33 runs per over.

Canada need 145 runs to win from 7 overs at 20.71 runs per over.

Over 42: Nice! Dhaniram smashes McMillan over his head for a sixer, plays out some dot balls and casually takes a single to keep the strike. Bhatti still not off the mark.
    Canada 216/6 (RR: 5.14): Bhatti 0* (7), Dhaniram 10* (11)
Canada need 148 runs to win from 8 overs at 18.50 runs per over.

    Craig McMillan into the attack.

    Canada 209/6 (RR: 5.09): Bhatti 0* (7), Dhaniram 2* (4)
Canada need 155 runs to win from 9 overs at 17.22 runs per over.

    I Billcliff b Styris 50 (56)

Billcliff and Samad pick off singles around the ground including one that takes Billo to his half-ton. But, the next time he is on strike he misses a straight one from Styris and is clean bowled. Cheers mate.

I Billcliff 50: 55 balls, 4 x 4s Good one! Billcliff trots through for a single bringing up his fourth ODI half-ton.

Over 37: Nice! Billcliff not going down without a fight dances down the track and smashes Vettori through the covers for four. Samad gets off the mark and the Canadian required run-rate shoots up a whole lot more.
    Canada 198/3 (RR: 5.35): Samad 1* (8), Billcliff 49* (53)
Canada need 166 runs to win from 13 overs at 12.76 runs per over.

Abdool Samad is the new batter.

    WICKET
    A Bagai b Vettori 37 (64)

Canada pick Vettori off for three more singles, employing the sweep quite well. Bagai then dances down the wicket, yorks himself and is clean bowled. Vettori giving that one quite a bit of air bravely, and being rewarded.

Over 34: Styris slips up with a wide, is picked off for a couple of singles, delivers a couple of dots and is lambasted through the covers for four off the last ball. Bagai backing away nicely, cutting and bagging a sweetly timed four.
    Canada 185/2 (RR: 5.44): Bagai 36* (62), Billcliff 39* (46)
Canada need 179 runs to win from 16 overs at 11.18 runs per over.

    Canada 178/2 (RR: 5.39): Bagai 31* (58), Billcliff 38* (44)
Canada need 186 runs to win from 17 overs at 10.94 runs per over.

Over 32: Styris cracks on with those medium-pacers restricting the Canadian middle-order men to a single each. Scotty proving to an important cog in the wheel of the New Zealand bowling attack as usual.
    Canada 171/2 (RR: 5.34): Bagai 25* (53), Billcliff 37* (43)
Canada need 193 runs to win from 18 overs at 10.72 runs per over.

    Canada 169/2 (RR: 5.45): Bagai 25* (53), Billcliff 36* (38)
Canada need 195 runs to win from 19 overs at 10.26 runs per over.

Over 30: Scotty's apparent partnership-breakers fail to do exactly that in his opening over as Ashish and Ian notch up their half-ton stand with five more singles. Not exactly of the entertainment value we had earlier on courtesy of Davison, but doing a job nonetheless.
    Canada 162/2 (RR: 5.43): Bagai 25* (53), Billcliff 29* (31)
Canada need 202 runs to win from 20 overs at 10.05 runs per over.

Canada need 207 runs to win from 21 overs at 9.63 runs per over.

Over 28: Billcliff is really blossoming now as he plays an array of strokes. Getting singles through mid-wicket, past mid-on and collecting a boundary thanks to a fancy cut through point. Bagai proving to be a capable partner - playing second fiddle for now.
    Canada 153/2 (RR: 5.42): Bagai 22* (50), Billcliff 22* (21)
Canada need 212 runs to win from 22 overs at 9.63 runs per over.

Over 27: Billcliff goes over cover for a two - no chance of a catch there. Vettori varies his angle of attack a bit as well as his pace but Bagai and co no better for now.
    Canada 144/2 (RR: 5.33): Bagai 20* (46), Billcliff 16* (18)
Canada need 220 runs to win from 23 overs at 9.56 runs per over.

Canada need 225 runs to win from 24 overs at 9.37 runs per over.

Over 25: Vettori comes in for a bit of stick as Bagai cashes in with a four while he and Billcliff use some fancy wrist work to angle him to all parts of the field for singles and twos.

Canada need 233 runs to win from 25 overs at 9.32 runs per over.

Canada need 244 runs to win from 26 overs at 9.32 runs per over.

Over 23: Billcliff comes down the wicket and hammers Vettori for Canada's first boundary in nine overs. A singleeach for Billcliff and Bagai make up the over. Billcliff tries to cut off the last ball of the over but is flummoxed by a slower ball - it's a dot ball.

Canada need 247 runs to win from 27 overs at 9.14 runs per over.

Over 22: Bagai sees off the first four balls of the over, gets another dogged single off Patel leaving Billcliff to face one dot ball at the end of the over. The Canadian total is on Nelson. Will it strike...mmm.

    G Barnett c McCullum b Vettori 40 (72)

Vettori strikes straight away as Barnett goes on the cut but edges and 'keeper McCullum takes a sharp catch. Bagai got a quick single before that.

Daniel Vettori is into the attack.

Canada need 255 runs to win from 30 overs at 8.50 runs per over.

Over 19: Patel is all over the Canadians with his spin at the moment. They cannot get him off the square and pick up just one more run as the early work done by Davison is not being built on. Pity that.

Canada need 264 runs to win from 33 overs at 7.76 runs per over.

Third and final powerplay will be taken.

Over 15: Patel almost opens with a maiden but is late cut for four by a blossoming Barnett. His line is looking good early on but there does not appear to be much turn out there for now.
    Canada 94/1 (RR: 6.71): Bagai 1* (9), Barnett 32* (48)
Canada need 270 runs to win from 35 overs at 7.50 runs per over.

    Jeetan Patel into the attack.

Canada need 274 runs to win from 36 overs at 7.40 runs per over.

    J Davison c and b Mason 52 (31)

Davison gets a no-ball through square for a single allowing Barnett the strike who in turn gets a run through mid-wicket. Davison then backs away trying to launch Mason over the ropes again but mis-hits and skies the ball. The bowler calls for the catch and pockets the high ball easily. The end of a good innings and a nice opening partnership.

Over 9: Tuffey's new line of attack around the wicket proving useful as he restricts the Canadian openers to a single each. Davison digs out a yorker for one and Barnett tickles through leg for a single. The first ball of the over saw 'keeper McCullum spill a diving catch with Davison on the drive.
    Canada 73/0 (RR: 8.11): Davison 52* (27), Barnett 16* (30)

Over 7: Tuffey's line still struggling as he concedes a wide and a no-ball with Barnett facing the entire over, driving through the covers to add two more runs to his personal tally.
    Canada 65/0 (RR: 9.28): Davison 46* (22), Barnett 14* (22)
Canada need 299 runs to win from 43 overs at 6.95 runs per over.

Over 6: Barnett plays out a couple of balls and then scampers through for a sinle. Davison continues on his merry way dancing down the track to Mason on a few occasions and bleeding the ball through cover for two fours. This guy is on fire.
    Canada 61/0 (RR: 10.16): Davison 46* (22), Barnett 12* (16)
Canada need 303 runs to win from 44 overs at 6.88 runs per over.

Over 5: Barnett gets in on the act and middles a drive for four. He then survives a huge shout for caught-behindbut the umpire believes otherwise. A flick past fine-leg brings up another four with New Zealand skipper Steve Fleming refusing to put his fine-leg fielder back. Stubborn mate.
    Canada 52/0 (RR: 10.40): Davison 38* (18), Barnett 11* (14)
Canada need 312 runs to win from 45 overs at 6.93 runs per over.

Over 4: Bam! Big over! Davison cuts hard two balls in a row, both race past point for four. Then a flick past shallow fine-leg for another four, then a smash over the bowler's head for another boundary. He then smacks a no-ball through mid-wicket for two. A slower ball strikes him on the pad - dot ball. And the last ball of the over is paddled around the corner past fine-leg for yet another boundary. Really fruiul over for Canada. Mason bowling really badly.
    Canada 43/0 (RR: 10.75): Davison 38* (18), Barnett 2* (8)
Canada need 321 runs to win from 46 overs at 6.97 runs per over.

Over 3: Tuffey tightens up his line as Davison and Barnett collect a single each and one leg-bye. Tuffey has a shout for lbw - bad luck mate, nowhere near in line.
    Canada 20/0 (RR: 6.66): Davison 16* (11), Barnett 2* (8)
Canada need 344 runs to win from 47 overs at 7.31 runs per over.

Over 2: Barnett sees off the first three balls of the over then gathers a quick single. Davison faces a couple of dots and then is clean bowled on the big-hit, but it's a no-ball from Mason. Davison then picks up a run thanks to a strong back foot drive through point.

Canada need 347 runs to win from 48 overs at 7.22 runs per over.

Michael Mason to share the new ball with Tuffey.

Over 1: Wow! Davison gets straight to the task at hand pulling a huge six over mid-wicket and getting a four through the slip area. Two through mid-wicket and two through square-leg bring the opening over's tally to 14. Bad start for Tuffey.
    Canada 14/0 (RR: 14.00): Davison 14* (6), Barnett 0* (0)
Canada need 350 runs to win from 49 overs at 7.14 runs per over.

Daryl Tuffey to take the new ball for New Zealand.

The players are out on the field again and John Davison and Geoff Barnett will open the batting for Canada.

And now for the Canadian chase...

New Zealand: 363 for five (50 overs)
Canada need 364 to win at 7.28 runs per over

Canada will never get it. Forget it. New Zealand posted their highest total in their World Cup history thanks to Fleming's skipper's knock, Vincent's return to form with a ton and a couple of late vigils from McCullum and Oram. Oh and Scotty Styris did his quick bit too. 47 runs coming in the last three overs of the innings. Time for a break of 30 minutes or so, so do return for the chase.

Over 50: Ouch! Really painful last over for the Canadians as McCullum and Oram go crazy. McCullum goes down on one knee and slog-sweeps for six, then dances down the wicket and gathers a sharp two, then nails another over the leg-side fielders to bring up his half-century. A single give Oram the strike as big Jacob cashes in on some loose bowling with a huge six of his own over extra-cover. The last ball of the innings is just a single.
    New Zealand 363/5 (RR: 7.26): McCullum 52* (21), Oram 35* (27)

    B McCullum 50: 20 balls, 1 x 4s, 5 x 6 The fastest half-ton in World Cup history and the fastest ODI half-ton by a New Zealander.

Over 49: Oram and McCullum fail to middle a couple of big-hits, gathering just singles and twos instead as Cummins continues to be impressive in these closing overs. But then Cummins gets one wrongand Oram sends the ball back over his head for a big six.
    New Zealand 341/5 (RR: 6.95): McCullum 37* (17), Oram 28* (25)

Over 48: Sandher delivers a rank full-toss which McCullum smashes over square-leg for...that's right, another six. He and Oram pick up more runs with some good running between the wicket as the over amounts to 12. Oram quite quiet with the willow - unusual.
    New Zealand 328/5 (RR: 6.83): McCullum 31* (13), Oram 21* (23)

    Sandher to continue...

Over 47: The fomer West Indian paceman returns to the attack with a pretty decent over. Unluckily getting edged for four and then limiting the batters to a handful of singles. Singles as valuable as dot balls at this time of the innings.
    New Zealand 316/5 (RR: 6.72): McCullum 22* (9), Oram 19* (21)

Cummins, after dropping that catch, is back in the attack for the closing overs.

Over 46: McCullum sails two sixes over the cow-corner ropes - One is really massive, the other just makes it over the ropes thanks to a fend off from Cummins, dropping the catch. THe rest of the over is singles left, right and centre as the New Zealand show continues.
    New Zealand 307/5 (RR: 6.67): McCullum 16* (6), Oram 16* (18)

Over 45: Oram nails the last ball of the over to the long-on ropes. In fact pver the long-on ropes with pretty much just one hand. Wow, what a stroke, what a six! A single each for him and McCullum (getting off the mark) before that sees Davison go for eight in his final over.
    New Zealand 289/5 (RR: 6.42): McCullum 1* (2), Oram 13* (16)

Davison to bowl his last over of the day.

Over 44: Quiet over as Oram pick up three runs, finding his feet and consolidating a bit after the loss of Vincent. McCullum not yet off the mark. They're sure to open up soon enough.
    New Zealand 281/5 (RR: 6.38): McCullum 0* (1), Oram 6* (11)

    Over 43:
    New Zealand 278/5 (RR: 6.46): McCullum 2* (5), Oram 3* (6)

Brendon McCullum is the new batter.
