commentary: india v bermuda
India reached 413-5.
By Dave Tickner
India (413 for five) beat Bermuda (156 all out) by 257 runs
It's the biggest ever World Cup victory by one run, and India have done the job they needed to do here. The batting - Ganguly excepted - was dynamic, but the bowling and fielding were slightly less convincing.

Bermuda need 261 runs to win from 54 balls at 29.00 runs per over.

Hurdle fails to get in line to Agarkar and loses his off stump as a result. Not long left in this game now.
Over 31: Kumble drops short to Hemp, who smashes the ball over midwicket for four to register a first World Cup 50 for Bermuda. Fine innings from the veteran county cricketer. Nothing more from the over.

WICKET!
L Cann c Uthappa b Agarkar 0 (2)
Cann might be a touch unlucky. It's a terrible shot, but a diving Uthappa might not have scooped that ball up cleanly diving forward at cover, but after conferring, the umpires decide the catch is clean and Cann has to go.
Hard-hitting Cann is the new batsman for Bermuda.
WICKET!

Hemp works to leg for a single, and Minors then scoops an easy catch to sub fielder Dinesh Kartik at mid-off to end a decent little partnership.

Bermuda need 309 runs to win from 21 overs at 14.71 runs per over.
Sehwag is into the attack for India.

Bermuda need 325 runs to win from 24 overs at 13.54 runs per over.
Agarkar is back into the attack in place of Patel.
Over 25: Hemp eases Kumble down the ground for a single. Minors misses a sweep and survives a concerted shout for lbw. Minros plays out the rest of the over defensively, but this partnership is frustrating for India who want this game wrapped up as quickly as possible.

Bermuda need 327 runs to win from 25 overs at 13.08 runs per over.

Bermuda need 337 runs to win from 27 overs at 12.48 runs per over.

IH Romaine lbw b Kumble 0 (10)
Another Bermudan falls leg-before, and there's no doubt about this one as Romaine wanders right across his stumps and is caugh in front of middle.
Anil Kumble is into the attack.
Over 16: Bizarrely, India don't appear to have taken the third powerplay. Hemp carves the ball to third-man for a single. Another big appeal for lbw, against Romaine this time, but Aleem Dar gives in favour of the batsman this time, as the contact was outside the line. Munaf follows up with a bouncer that Romaine ducks.
Bermuda 55/3 (RR: 3.44): Hemp 26* (30), Romaine 0* (7)
Bermuda need 359 runs to win from 34 overs at 10.56 runs per over.

Bermuda need 403 runs to win from 45 overs at 8.96 runs per over.

Bermuda 10/1 (RR: 2.50): Outerbridge 3* (11), Borden 6* (7)

Happily, the delay seems to be a short one, and the players are back out and ready for action.
Rain Stopped Play:
Borden gets a single from the first ball of Agarkar's over, but with the rainfall getting slightly heavier, the umpires take the players off the field.
Over 3: Better over for Bermuda, as Outerbridge gets a single and then Borden clips Zaheer sweetly through square-leg for a boundary. Borden gets another single and Bermuda are up and running!
Bermuda 8/1 (RR: 2.67): Outerbridge 2* (8), Borden 5* (4)
Bermuda need 406 runs to win from 47 overs at 8.64 runs per over.

OL Pitcher b Zaheer Khan 0 (6)
Zaheer strikes with the final ball of his first over, jagging one back at Pitcher anddisturbing the off stump.
Zaheer Khan will open the bowling for India.
The India players are out, with just the 413 runs behind them. Pitcher and Outerbridge are the opening batsmen charged with the task of chasing that target.
India: 413-5 (50 overs)
Bermuda need 414 to win at 8.28 runs per over
Recognising the importance of net run-rate in this group, India have understandably gone run crazy here, demolishing the popgun Bermuda attack. But for a ponderous, selfish innings from Ganguly, India could have threatened 500. But it's still a World Cup-record score, and the 18 sixes equals the record set by South Africa last week against Netherlands.
Over 50: Tendulkar goes to 50 and India go past 400 with a sweep over fine-leg for six runs. This is the highest ever World Cup innings, and Tendullkar gets a single on the legside, and Dravid's first ball gets a single. Tendulkar sweeps over square-leg for two runs. Tendulkar gets a single from the fifth ball, and Dravid joins in the fun with a mighty six over wide long-on to end the over.
India 413/5 (RR: 8.26): Tendulkar 57* (29), Dravid 7* (2)
Tendulkar 50: 26 balls, 2 x 4s, 4 x 6s
Hemp is the unfortunate bowler for the final over.
Over 49: Tendulkar reverse-sweeps a boundary to take India to the brink of the record. He gets a single from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.
India 396/5 (RR: 8.08): Tendulkar 47* (25), Dravid 0* (0)
Rahul Dravid is the new batsman.
WICKET!
Yuvraj Singh c Jones b Leverock 83 (46)
Tendulkar laucnhes another six over long-off as Leverock takes more punishment. Tendulkar gets a single from the next ball. Another massive slog-sweep from Yuvraj lands on the roof of the stands, but he doesn't get hold of the next one, skying a catch to Jones at long-off. Great innings, but Bermuda will point with some justification to a clear stumping early in his innings that wasn't given.
Over 48: Yuvraj smashes four over midwicket, then hammers a straight drive into the stumps at the bowler's end which denies him four. Nothing to deny him from the next two balls, though, as both disappear over the boundary ropes for six. The final ball is pulled away for four and 400 is very much on here.
India 378/4 (RR: 7.88): Yuvraj 77* (44), Tendulkar 35* (21)
Over 47: Leverock starts his over with a dot ball to Yuvraj, but the next ball is hammered over midwicket. Hemp takes a stunning one-handed catch, but unfortunately he is behind the boundary when he does so. That's 50 for Yuvraj, who carves the next ball to deep point for two runs and whacks down the ground for a single. Tendulkar gets three with a reverse-sweep fine on the offside. Yuvraj hits down the ground for a single from the final ball.
India 358/4 (RR: 7.62): Yuvraj 57* (38), Tendulkar 35* (21)
Yuvraj 50: 35 balls, 1 x 4, 4 x 6s
Over 46: Tendulkar pushes a single down the ground. Yuvraj drives to deep point for a single, and Tendulkar hits the next ball over long-off for a maximum. He repeats the shot next ball, and gets it far further over the rope this time. The next ball is flicked over square-leg for two runs.
India 345/4 (RR: 7.50): Yuvraj 47* (33), Tendulkar 32* (20)
The ball has been changed, which should help these two batsmen. Tucker is back into the attack.
Over 45: Tendulkar paddles a sweep fine on the legside for two runs and then pushes a single. Another hard sweep from Yuvraj, but just a single this time. A rare dot ball follows, and Tendulkar reverse-sweeps unconvincingly into the covers for a single. We might have found a shot he can't play. Yuvraj can certainly play through the legside, heaving the final ball over the ropes for another boundary.
India 329/4 (RR: 7.31): Yuvraj 46* (32), Tendulkar 17* (15)
Over 44: Two singles from the first two balls of the over, and Tendulkar drives the third ball over cover for four as the ball bounces just inside the rope. Tendulkar adds a single with a paddle sweep, but Yuvraj misses the next one. The final ball of the over comes off the pads for four leg-byes, and that makes 29 off the last 12 balls.
India 318/4 (RR: 7.23): Yuvraj 39* (30), Tendulkar 13* (11)
Over 43: Yuvraj hits down the ground for a single, and Tendulkar gets another with a hard sweep. Yuvraj gets back-to-back sixes with slog-sweeps over midwicket, and hits the final ball of the over down the ground for four. He's obviously determined to take advantage of the life he was given by umpire Harper, who must have pressed the wrong button - it's the only explanation.
India 307/4 (RR: 7.14): Yuvraj 38* (27), Tendulkar 7* (8)
Over 42: Shocking decision from the third umpire robs Minors and Cann. yuvraj misses an attempted cut, stumbles forward, and is clearly on the line when the bails are removed. Inexplicably though, third umpire Daryl Harper gives it not out. Yuvraj gets three twos from the next four balls, and a single from the last, but he shouldn't still be out there.
India 289/4 (RR: 6.88): Yuvraj 21* (23), Tendulkar 6* (6)
Over 41: Nothing from the first two balls of Leverock's over, but Yuvraj hammers the third down the ground for two and gets a single from the next ball. Tendulkar chips a drive into the covers for two runs to end the over.
India 282/4 (RR: 6.88): Yuvraj 14* (17), Tendulkar 6* (6)
Leverock is back into the attack.
Over 40: Singles from the first five balls of Cann's over, and Tendulkar gets the final ball through point for two.
India 277/4 (RR: 6.93): Yuvraj 11* (13), Tendulkar 4* (4)
Over 39: Yuvraj hits down the ground for a single, but Tendulkar can't get anything from the final ball of the over.
India 270/4 (RR: 6.92): Yuvraj 8* (10), Tendulkar 0* (1)
Sachin Tendulkar is the new batsman for India.

MS Dhoni c Tucker b Borden 29 (25)
Dhoni decides to open his shoulders and hammers a six over midwicket. He tries to repeat the shot next ball but gets under the ball a bit too much. The ball looks certain to drop safe behind the bowler, but Tucker dives full-length to grab the ball inches off the turf. A second stunning catch of the innings.
Over 38: Two singles to each batsman from the first four balls of Cann's over, and Dhoni then punches the fifth ball straight down the ground for four and collects a single from ball six. Sensible, risk-free batting.
India 263/3 (RR: 6.86): Dhoni 23* (23), Yuvraj 7* (7)
Bermuda have just 40 minutes to bowl the last 13 overs which clearly won't happen, so there will presumably be some punishment for that.
Over 37: Yuvraj works to leg for a single. Dhoni works the next ball to leg for a single that becomes two thanks to an overthrow. Actually no bat on that, they're leg-byes. Dhoni gets two more with a thick outside edge over point, and gets a single down the ground to end the over.
India 254/3 (RR: 6.86): Dhoni 16* (19), Yuvraj 5* (5)
Over 36: Yuvraj pushes to cover for a single, and Dhoni gets the next ball down the ground for another. Yuvraj cuts a third single in three balls, but Dhoni then places a drive wide of Leverock to the boundary. Excellent placement, and didn't try and hit it too hard. Dhoni gets a single from the fifth ball of the over, and Yuvraj adds another run from the final ball, so nineruns from the over.
India 248/3 (RR: 6.89): Dhoni 13* (14), Yuvraj 4* (4)
Over 35: Yuvraj works his first ball to leg for a single.
India 239/3 (RR: 6.83): Dhoni 7* (11), Yuvraj 1* (1)

India 142/1 (RR: 6.17): Ganguly 46* (72), Sehwag 84* (67)
Over 22: Ganguly turns down a long single from the first ball of the over, but does take one to long-off from ball two. The third ball of the over is worked to leg for a single by Sehwag. Ganguly gets one more from the final ball of the over, but a good start from Borden.

Over 17: Ganguly works Leverock to leg for a single, and Sehwag backs away to work through the covers for another. Ganguly gets a single from the final ball of the over, but a good start from Leverock.
India 109/1 (RR: 6.41): Ganguly 22* (47), Sehwag 75* (56)
Leverock is into the attack for the first time after one very expensive over from Hemp.

India 106/1 (RR: 6.63): Ganguly 20* (43), Sehwag 74* (54)
Bermuda have declined to take the final powerplay at this stage.
Over 15: Sehwag guides the ball to fine-leg for a single, and Ganguly adds another to deep mid-off. Sehwag then scores the first maximum of the innings as he hits hard back over Hemp's head. Sehwag then misses an attempted cut off a no-ball, and even though he can't be out stumped off a no-ball, the decision is referred to the third umpire for some reason. The final ball of the over is launched over cover for anothe six by an increasingly dominant Sehwag.
India 99/1 (RR: 6.60): Ganguly 18* (40), Sehwag 69* (51)
David Hemp is back into the attack.
Drinks. Great stuff here, first with the emotional and heartfelt celebrations as 17-year-old Jone struck with his first World Cup delivery thanks to a stunning Leverock catch, and more recently the fine strokeplay of Sehwag, playing his way back into form.
Over 14: Sehwag thumps the ball through mid-on for another four, and cuts hard to deep point for a single. A visibly-frustrated Ganguly can't put the next two balls away, and then blocks the final two balls of the over.
India 84/1 (RR: 6.00): Ganguly 17* (38), Sehwag 56* (46)
Over 13: Ganguly gets lucky as an ugly heave over the top skies high into the air, but is dropped by Borden running back from mid-off. India 79/1 (RR: 6.08): Ganguly 17* (34), Sehwag 51* (44)
Over 12: Sehwag forces through cover off the back foot for a single, and Ganguly adds another with a push down the ground to deep mid-off. Ganguly adds a single to end the over and keep the strike.
India 75/1 (RR: 6.25): Ganguly 14* (29), Sehwag 50* (43)
Sehwag 50: 43balls, 11 x 4s
Janeiro Tucker is into the attack in place of the impressive but expensive Jones.
Over 11: With Sehwag smashing boundaries at will, Ganguly appears to be getting impatient, and tries to come down the track and across his stumps to put th ball away. He's trying to hit the ball too hard and can't beat the infield. The next ball is a wide down the legside, and Ganguly gets a single from an inside edge next ball, and Hurdle has overstepped again. Sehwag gets a thick edge to an attempted drive, and collects a single as the ball skids down to third-man.
India 67/1 (RR: 6.09): Ganguly 12* (27), Sehwag 44* (39)
Bermuda have taken the second powerplay despite 17 runs coming from the last over of powerplay one.
Over 10: Jones starts the over with a wide, and the next ball is a wide half-volley that Sehwag thunders through cover for four. Bermuda have bowled some excellent deliveries today, but too many four-balls are getting Sehwag back into form. The next ball is legside, and Sehwag flicks off his hips for four more. Sehwag makes it three boundaries in a row with a coruscating cut shot through backward point. Good signs for Sehwag, and in a way even better signs when he blocks the next two deliveries solidly before smashing another wide half-volley through extra-cover for a fourth boundary in the over. Excellent batting from Sehwag.
India 63/1 (RR: 6.30): Ganguly 11* (21), Sehwag 43* (38)
Over 9: Ganguly works the ball off his hips for a single. Hurdle drops short, and Sehwag smashes yet another boundary through the point region. Top shot. Sehwag plays the final ball of the over deliberately to third-man for a single.
India 46/1 (RR: 5.11): Ganguly 11* (21), Sehwag 27* (32)
Over 8: Ganguly comes down the track to Jones and misses an attempted hoik over midwicket, but the ball bounces over the strike. Ganguly bunts the next ball back to the bowler who picks up and throws down the stumps. Ganguly guides the next ball to third-man for a single. Sehwag turns the ball to leg looking for a single that isn't there, and he has to send Ganguly back. The final ball of the over is overpitched, and Sehwag leans into it and drives sumptuously through the covers.
India 40/1 (RR: 5.00): Ganguly 10* (20), Sehwag 22* (27)
Over 7: Ganguly gets an inside edge into the pads and Sehwag calls him through for a sharp single. Sehwag swings and misses with a flat-footed waft at an outswinger from Hurdle, and is then beaten by a ripper that seams and bounces to beat the outside edge. Another no-ball from Hurdle adds one more to the extras column. Excellent over again though.
India 35/1 (RR: 5.00): Ganguly 9* (17), Sehwag 18* (24)
Over 6: Sehwag drives behind point for two more, and then hammers a short ball from Jones through point for a boundary. Jones ends the over with anothe short ball, and Sehwag hammers another boundary and migh just be playing himself back into some form here.
India 33/1 (RR: 5.50): Ganguly 8* (16), Sehwag 18* (18)
Over 5: Ganguly glides a no-ball from Hurdle to wide third-man, where Jones makes a fine diving stop to save two runs. Ganguly then misses out on a full-toss, hitting it straight at cover. A good inswinger raps Ganguly on the pads, but it was perhaps not doing enough to come back and threaten the stumps.
India 23/1 (RR: 4.60): Ganguly 8* (16), Sehwag 8* (12)
Over 4: Jones bowls a legside wide to the left-handed Ganguly, who gets a streaky boundary with a genuine edge that flies at catchableheight through the vacant slip area. Not even Dwayne could get to that one. Ganguly adds a single with a mistimed pull through midwicket, and Sehwag defends the final ball to cover off the back foot.
India 20/1 (RR: 5.00): Ganguly 6* (9), Sehwag 8* (12)
Over 3: Ganguly gets off the mark, fending a short ball into the legside for a single. Still lots of swing for Hurdle, and Sehwag has to defend two balls in a row on off stump. The next is driven hard but straight to short cover. A no-ball from hurdle costs dear, as Sehwag drives the final ball of the over through cover for four runs.
India 14/1 (RR: 4.67): Ganguly 1* (4), Sehwag 8* (11)
Over 2: No surprise to see Jones follow up his wicket with a wide. And it's equally sunsurprising to see Sehwag have a couple of ungainly and unsuccessful slashes at the ball outside off stump. Sehwag does play a more orthodox and successful shot last ball, hitting the ball sweetly through cover off the back foot for the first boundary of the innings.
India 8/1 (RR: 4.00): Ganguly 0* (3), Sehwag 4* (5)
When Jones eventually emerges from the bottom of a pile of delirious Bermuda players - happily not including Leverock - Sehwag is already in position to face his first ball.
WICKET!
AR Uthappa c Leverock b Jones 3 (4)
Absolutely astonishing. Jones' first ball is a gentle loosener outside off stump, Uthappa wafts lazily at it and edges well wide of big Dwayne Leverock at slip. But the 19st spinner takes off to his right and plucks the ball out of the air, a stunning one-handed catch from one of the tournament's cult heroes. The celebrations go on for quite some time as Jones strikes with his first World Cup delivery. Someone even unwisely attempts to lift Dwayne up.
Malachi Jones will share the new ball.
Over 1: There's some swing for Hurdle straight away, but the third ball doesn't swing, drifts into Uthappa's pads and is clipped through midwicket for the first three runs of the innings. Hurdle bowls three tidy inswingers to Ganguly who blocks each of them. Decent start from Hurdle, who seems to have dropped his pace slightly in search of sideways movement.
India 3/0 (RR: 3.00): Uthappa 3* (3), Ganguly 0* (3)
Kevin Hurdle will bowl the first over of the innings.
Robin Uthappa has replaced Virender Sehwag at the top of the order alongside Sourav Ganguly.
The players from both sides are gathered on the outfield to observe a minute's silence in memory of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, who died on Sunday aged 58.
Bermuda have won the toss and decided to field first. India know they need to win this game, so could come out blazing against the beleagured Bermudans.
