commentary: sri lanka v india
S Tendulkar b Fernando 0.
Sri Lanka (254 for six) beat India (185 all out) by 69 runs with 6.3 overs remaining
Sri Lanka through to the Super Eights and India out of the World Cup bar a miracle. All Indian eyes will be on the Bangaldesh versus Bermuda match on Sunday. If Bermuda somehow manage to beat Bangladesh, India will go through. But really, that ain't going to happen. A thorough performance for Mahela Jayawardene's men after losing the toss and being asked to bat first. Silva and Tharanga came to the party with the bat while the magic of Murali once again dominated with the ball. Oh, and Vaas did his usual job with the ball at the top of the Indian innings. The losers really need a big one from their captain or Sehwag etc, but it was not to be and Tendulkar's duck did not help their cause either. Thanks for joining us now go check in on the Ireland and West Indies clash. Cheers.
Over 43.3:
India 185/10 (RR: 4.25): Singh 17* (20)
WICKET
M Patel c Vaas b Dilshan 10 (17)
That's it! It's all over as Patel blocks out two balls and is then caught on the wide-ish mid-wicket fence by Vaas. Dilshan bags one wicket for the match.
Over 43: Singh and Patel five runs around the ground as Muralitharan comes to the end of his allotted 10 overs for the match. Nice stuff as usual from Murali - three for 41 in 10.
India 185/9 (RR: 4.30): Singh 17* (20), Patel 10* (14)
India need 70 runs to win from 7 overs at 10.00 runs per over.
Over 42: Singh carves a full delivery through mid-wicket for four, then nails a huge six over lon-off. Fernando pulls up with some sort of injury and is now going off the field. Dilshan completes the rest of the over with Patel and Singh employing the sweep well. Singh facing out the last two balls of the over, dot balls of course.
India 180/9 (RR: 4.28): Singh 16* (18), Patel 6* (10)
India need 75 runs to win from 8 overs at 9.37 runs per over.
Fernando back into the attack.
Over 41: Patel gets off the mark rocking onto the back foot and cutting hard for four. He then slogs onto the on-side, not getting the middle of the bat and getting just one run. Singh gets a single off the first and last ball of the over.
India 168/9 (RR: 4.09): Singh 5* (13), Patel 5* (9)
India need 87 runs to win from 9 overs at 9.66 runs per over.
Over 40: Dilshan kicks off with a maiden as Patel survives a loud lbw shout off the last ball of the over. That was nowhere near out, silly appeal.
India 161/9 (RR: 4.02): Singh 3* (10), Patel 0* (6)
India need 94 runs to win from 10 overs at 9.40 runs per over.
Tillekeratne Dilshan is into the attack.

Z Khan c Malinga b Muralitharan 1 (5)
Khan gets off the mark with a quick scamper for one, Singh gets another single but then Khan reckons he fancies a six over long-on but falls hopelessly short and is snapped up by Malinga in the deep. That's three wickets for the legendary Murali.
Muralitharan back into the attack too.
Over 38: The batsmen crossed while the ball was in the air and Singh sees off the last three balls of the over, no more runs.
India 159/8 (RR: 4.18): Khan 0* (0), Singh 2* (6)

R Dravid c Muralitharan b Jayasuriya 60 (82)
He had to chase the runs sometimes and is caught in the deep by Murali after failing to clear the long-on ropes. He was dropped the ball before that by a diving Arnold, collecting two runs in the process.
Over 37: After not seeing a boundary since the 18th over we are blessed with four in one over. Dravid goes to his fify and in the process takes Malinga to the cleaners. A cut, a tickle to third-man, a flick behind square-leg and a smash through backward point is how those fours came about.
India 157/7 (RR: 4.24): Dravid 58* (79), Singh 2* (6)
India need 98 runs to win from 13 overs at 7.53 runs per over.
R Dravid 50: 77 balls, 5 x 4s There it is. Dravid races through the 40s to go to his 78th ODI half-ton.
Over 36: A single each for Dravid and Singh. Dravid cramps up mid-over and calls for a runner (Robin Uthappa). History has proven that an introduction of a runner normally causes a bit of confusion. So perhaps we will soon have another run-out on our hands. Required rate now over eight.
India 140/7 (RR: 3.88): Dravid 41* (73), Singh 2* (6)
India need 115 runs to win from 14 overs at 8.21 runs per over.

India 138/7 (RR: 3.94): Dravid 40* (72), Singh 1* (1)
India need 117 runs to win from 15 overs at 7.80 runs per over.

A Agarkar c Arnold b Malinga 10 (25)
Agarkar plays out three dot balls and then in his frustration goes for the big shot. He does not middle and is caught at deep-ish mid-on by Russel Arnold. Poor shot selection indeed.
Over 34: Rahul Dravid is a master tactician and is really calm and collected out there as he farms the strike bagging two twos at the start of the over and allowing Agarkar to have a bit of the strike toward the middle of the over. Agarkar continues to show his mettle with the bat and gets a couple of singles with Dravid finishing the over off with some more singles. Sri Lanka need to watch out. They've done the hard work now need to finish the job pronto.
India 136/6 (RR: 4.00): Dravid 39* (71), Agarkar 10* (21)
India need 119 runs to win from 16 overs at 7.43 runs per over.
Over 33: Malinga on fire! Dravid gets a single off the first ball leaving Agarkar to fend off five fiery deliveries from the speedster. The all-rounder does well dodging a couple of bouncers and fending off some rising deliveries.
India 128/6 (RR: 3.86): Dravid 33* (67), Agarkar 8* (19)
India need 127 runs to win from 17 overs at 7.45 runs per over.
Malinga back into the attack again.
Over 32: Sri Lanka have been conceding a lot of singles in the last five overs or so but this time around the field is brought in abit and they pick up just one run off Jayasuriya's first over after the interval. Required rate now well over seven.
India 127/6 (RR: 3.96): Dravid 32* (66), Agarkar 8* (14)
India need 128 runs to win from 18 overs at 7.11 runs per over.
Drinks break!
Over 31: More boring singles left, right and centre. India employing the late cut with good effect to the great Murali, who needs to pitch it up a bit more we reckon.
India 126/6 (RR: 4.06): Dravid 31* (63), Agarkar 8* (11)
India need 129 runs to win from 19 overs at 6.78 runs per over.
Over 30: Five singles all around the ground for the struggling Indians, managing to get through an over without losing a wicket. Agarkar really impressing with the bat from the get-go.
India 121/6 (RR: 4.03): Dravid 28* (60), Agarkar 6* (8)
India need 134 runs to win from 20 overs at 6.70 runs per over.
Over 29: Agarkar starts off quite nicely with a two thanks to a solid cut and then an edge for another two. He then plays out the rest of the over with no further theatrics in this rather eventful period of play. India in huge danger of exiting the World Cup.
India 116/6 (RR: 4.00): Dravid 25* (57), Agarkar 4* (5)
India need 139 runs to win from 21 overs at 6.61 runs per over.

India 112/5 (RR: 4.00): Dravid 25* (57), Dhoni 0* (0)
India need 143 runs to win from 22 overs at 6.50 runs per over.

Y Singh run out Arnold 6 (12)
Ouch! The last thing India needed was a run-out. Dravid and Singh take a single each but then Dravid plays down leg, Yuvraj comes for the single but is sent back by his skipper. Russel Arnold lobs the ball in to Jayasuriya who whips off the non-striker's bails. He is out by some distance.
Over 27: Muralitharan and Jayasuriya proving in tandem proving too good for India at the moment as the batters play and miss at a couple more and pick up just three more runs in the over. Another wicket now and India will be in deep trouble.
India 110/4 (RR: 4.07): Dravid 24* (53), Singh 5* (10)
India need 145 runs to win from 23 overs at 6.30 runs per over.

India need 148 runs to win from 24 overs at 6.16 runs per over.

V Sehwag c Jayawardene b Muralitharan 48 (46)
Two singles each and then another wide before Sehwag plays forward and tries to open the face of his bat toward third-man. He edges and Mahela Jayawardene takes a brilliant catch at first slip. That was low and sharp but he held on.
Over 22: Jayasuriya's first over is a mixed bag as Dravid and Sehwag find the huge gaps in the field, picking up five runs in singles. Murali and Jaya' set to bowl in tandem by the looks of things.

Sri Lanka 71/2 (RR: 3.94): Tharanga 33* (50), Sangakkara 6* (16)
Over 17: Three singles are conceded off the over. Agarkar bowls the perfect length just outside the off-stump. This is some good variation from Agarkar.
Sri Lanka 70/2 (RR: 4.11): Tharanga 33* (45), Sangakkara 6* (15)
Over 16: Tharanga guides the first ball of the over through cover for a boundary. There is too much width and he walks across his stumps and times the ball to perfection. DPMD Jayawardene c Dhoni b Agarkar 7 (20)
Agarkar bowls two dot balls. Then Tharanga sneaks a single off the third ball of the over. The fourth ball of the over is full and down the leg-side, Jayawardene flicks at the ball and the edge is found. Dhoni takes a great catch behind the stumps. Stunning catch!
Over 12: Two singles are conceded off the over.
Sri Lanka 52/1 (RR: 4.33): Tharanga 22* (31), Jayawardene 7* (19)
Over 11: Jayawardene is beaten again by Khan before playing a solid forward defensive that should boost confidence. Jayawardene does get four with a wild drive over cover, and a wide completes the scoring from the over.
Sri Lanka 49/1 (RR: 4.45): Tharanga 21* (26), Jayawardene 5* (17)
India take the second powerplay to no great surprise.
Over 10: Munaf is on line straight away, but Tharanga is able to get a single from a thick inside edge to square-leg. The pressure on Jayawardene is beginning to show, and his uppish drive bounces just short of Agarkar at mid-off. Jayawardene does get off the mark from the next ball - his 11th - with a deliberate glide to third-man. Munaf then beats Tharanga with a ball slanted across the left-hander. No luck for Munaf as the final ball of an excellent over flashes off the edge wide of Sehwag - who is still too fine at second slip - and down to the boundary for four.
Sri Lanka 44/1 (RR: 4.40): Tharanga 21* (26), Jayawardene 1* (11)
First change of bowling with Munaf Patel replacing Agarkar.
Over 9: Tharanga pushes down the ground for a single before Khan beats Jayawardene with a ball slanted across the right-hander. An even better one two balls later jags past Jayawardene's tentative defensive prod. Another ball slanted across the batsman is perhaps harshly called wide. Jayawardene lets the last two balls go through to Dhoni, and it brings a quite brilliant over from Khan to an end.
Sri Lanka 38/1 (RR: 4.22): Tharanga 16* (24), Jayawardene 0* (8)
Over 8: Jayawardene is rapped on the pads first ball, and there's yet another huge, huge appeal. Good decision from Harper - the ball was missing leg on this occasion - and the batsmen get a leg-bye. Agarkar sticks a wide down the legsidewith the left-handed Tharanga back on strike. Tharanga has a mighty swing and a miss at a ball well outside off stump, before working the next ball to leg for a single. Jayawardene lets two outswingers pass harmlessly through to Dhoni.
Sri Lanka 36/1 (RR: 4.50): Tharanga 15* (23), Jayawardene 0* (3)

ST Jayasuriya c Agarkar b Khan 6 (23)
Another huge leg-before shout from Khan after jagging one back into Jayasuriya and trapping him on the crease. Another good shout, but maybe height was a factor. Khan follows up with a well-directed bouncer that has Jayasuriya hooking and missing. Hawk-Eye suggests that earlier lbw shout was going on to hit middle, so Jayasuriya may have had another escape there. But his tortured innings comes to an end from the final ball of the over as frustration gets the better of the left-hander, who tries to drive over the top but can only slice the ball high into the air to third-man where Agarkar judges the catch nicely.
Over 6: Another big lbw appeal, and another leg-bye. Swing for Agarkar, but there's enough doubt about this one with the ball pitching very close to leg stump and maybe just clipping the stumps. Fair enough decision that one from Harper. Another extra from a wide outside the off stump follows, before Jayasuriya clips through square-leg, but the ball slows up on the lush outfield and the batsmen have to run hard to get back for three. Genuine edge from Tharanga flies wide of Sehwag at a very narrow second slip and down to the boundary. Tharanga gets another boundary in more convinving style, slamming a cover drive deliberately over the ring fielders.
Sri Lanka 32/0 (RR: 5.33): Tharanga 14* (20), Jayasuriya 6* (16)
Over 5: Jayasuriya gets a thick inside edge into the legside for a single, before Khan beats Tharanga with a ball that nips back between Tharanga's body and inside edge. The bowling since that first over has been exceptional, and another good ball finds Tharanga's outside edge and runs to third-man for a single.
Sri Lanka 19/0 (RR: 3.80): Tharanga 6* (15), Jayasuriya 3* (15)
Over 4: Another fine delivery from Agarkar, squaring Tharanga up and finding the edge. But it's a thick edge and flies well wide of second slip for a single to third-man. Jayasuriya pushes to covers and scampers through for a good quick single. Agarkar ends another fine over with a beauty that moves away from Tharanga and beats his defensive prod, going through to Dhoni at good pace and a nice height.
Sri Lanka 17/0 (RR: 4.25): Tharanga 5* (13), Jayasuriya 2* (11)
Over 3: Great first delivery from Khan in his second over, jagging back at Jayasuriya and passing over the top of the stumps. Jayasuriya gets a thick outside edge to third-man for a single, and Tharanga gets a couple from a clip through midwicket. Tharanga edges just short of second slip from the final ball of the over and gets a single as Virender Sehwag parries.
Sri Lanka 15/0 (RR: 5.00): Tharanga 4* (9), Jayasuriya 1* (9)
Over 2: If Khan's start was ridiculous, Agarkar's is sublime. The first ball swings in to Jayasuriya and traps him plumb in front. Huge lbw apepal, but the umpire Daryl Harper finds some doubt from somewhere. The next ball hits the pads again, and there's another hge appeal. This one is rightly turned for height, and the third ball beats the outside edge. But another legside ball flicks off the batsman's padsand a fumble from MS Dhoni concedes a leg-bye - already the eighth of the innings. Great first over from Agarkar.
Sri Lanka 11/0 (RR: 5.50): Tharanga 1* (5), Jayasuriya 0* (7)
Ajit Agarkar will share the new ball.
Over 1: Khan starts with a wide down the legside, and Tharanga gets the first run off the bat with a drive behind square on the offside. Another legside wide from Khan, and another legside ball flicks off Jayasuria's pads for two leg-byes. Again Khan is wayward, and again the ball comes off the pads. Another leg-bye. Tharanga back on strike, but more of the same from Khan, and this time the deflection off the pad goes all the way to the boundary. Only three runs against the bowler, but a terrible first over from Khan and India instantly under pressure.
Sri Lanka 10/0 (RR: 10.00)
