  • Powerplay overs in red.

Australia (232 for three) beat Sri Lanka (226 all out) by seven wickets with 7.2 overs remaining
Easy win for Australia, cruising to victory over the much-fancied Sri Lankans with plenty of time and wickets to spare. Awesome performance from Australia, who would surely still have won even if Sri Lanka had played the big guns.

Over 42.4: Ponting pats back three dot balls before finishing things in style with a huge six over long-on. Crushing victory for Australia over the second-best side at this tournament.
    Australia 232/3 (RR: 5.44): Ponting 66* (80), Symonds 63* (71)

Over 42: Two singles from the first two balls of Dilshan's over, and Symonds then bring the scores level with a heave over midwicket for four.
    Australia 226/3 (RR: 5.38): Ponting 60* (76), Symonds 63* (71)
Australia need 1 run to win from 48 balls at 0.13 runs per over.

Over 41: Three more singles form Bandara's over. Not long to go now.
    Australia 220/3 (RR: 5.37): Ponting 59* (75), Symonds 58* (66)
Australia need 7 runs to win from 54 balls at 0.78 runs per over.

Over 40: Three more runs from the over as Australia close on victory.
    Australia 217/3 (RR: 5.43): Ponting 58* (73), Symonds 56* (62)
Australia need 10 runs to win from 10 overs at 1.00 runs per over.

Over 39: Ponting gets two to third-man before a gorgeous straight-drive for four. Another quick single to Ponting before a crunching four through the covers takes Symonds to his 50. Symonds gets three runs from the last two balls of the over, and the end is nigh now.
    Australia 214/3 (RR: 5.49): Ponting 58* (71), Symonds 53* (58)
Australia need 13 runs to win from 11 overs at 1.18 runs per over.

    Symonds 50: 56 balls, 4 x 4s, 2 x 6s

Over 38: Cheap over from Dilshan, a single from the first ball followed by five dots.
    Australia 200/3 (RR: 5.26): Ponting 51* (68), Symonds 46* (55)
Australia need 27 runs to win from 12 overs at 2.25 runs per over.

Over 37: Six singles and a no-ball from Maharoof's comeback over, the last of which takes Ponting through to yet another half-century. Fine, controlled innings from the Aussie skipper, albeit in less-than challenging circumstances.
    Australia 199/3 (RR: 5.38): Ponting 50* (67), Symonds 46* (50)
Australia need 28 runs to win from 13 overs at 2.15 runs per over.

    Ponting 50: 67 balls, 3 x 4s

Maharoof is back into the attack for Sri Lanka.

Over 36: Dilshan still plugging away, and concedes just two singles from the over. Will Symonds be tempted to try and finish this in a hurry, or will Australia just meander to victory? And, most pertinently of all, who cares?
    Australia 192/3 (RR: 5.33): Ponting 47* (63), Symonds 43* (47)
Australia need 35 runs to win from 14 overs at 2.50 runs per over.

Over 35: Another non-threatening over from Bandara, three single coming from it.
    Australia 190/3 (RR: 5.43): Ponting 46* (59), Symonds 42* (45)
Australia need 37 runs to win from 15 overs at 2.47 runs per over.

Over 34: Five singles from Dilshan's over as Australia continue to canter towards a simple victory.
    Australia 187/3 (RR: 5.50): Ponting 44* (54), Symonds 41* (44)
Australia need 40 runs to win from 16 overs at 2.50 runs per over.

Drinks. Australia are cruising to victory here, with Symonds and Ponting helping themselves to some batting practice against a popgun second-string Sri Lanka attack.

Over 33: Symonds effortlessly smears the ball through midwicket for another four, and then a low full-toss is deposited to the same boundary with even less effort. Symonds then misses a couple of attempted cut shots as Bandara overcompensates with his line, but it scarcely matters.
    Australia 182/3 (RR: 5.52): Ponting 42* (51), Symonds 38* (41)
Australia need 45 runs to win from 17 overs at 2.65 runs per over.

Bandara and his mullet are back into the action.

Over 32: Ponting works to leg for a single and, after four dot balls from Dilshan, Symonds manages to get the ball out to deep cover for another to end the over and keep the strike.
    Australia 174/3 (RR: 5.44): Ponting 42* (51), Symonds 30* (35)
Australia need 53 runs to win from 18 overs at 2.94 runs per over.

    Dilshan is into the attack.

Over 31: A loopy full-toss from Jayasuriya is hammered over midwicket for six by Symonds who, after a couple of singles are exchanged, absolutely murders the ball through the covers off the back foot for four. The man on the fence had less than 10 yards to cover and never moved.
    Australia 172/3 (RR: 5.55): Ponting 41* (50), Symonds 29* (30)
Australia need 55 runs to win from 19 overs at 2.89 runs per over.

Over 30: Ponting guides to third man for two runs and after a single apiece whacks through cover for two more. Six runs off Arnold's over, and Australia doing this easily now.
    Australia 160/3 (RR: 5.33): Ponting 40* (49), Symonds 18* (25)
Australia need 67 runs to win from 20 overs at 3.33 runs per over.

Over 29: Three singles and a huge six over long-on from Symonds as Australia continue to rattle along at a good rate here. Nothing Jayasuriya can do to stem the runs in that over.
    Australia 154/3 (RR: 5.31): Ponting 35* (44), Symonds 17* (24)
Australia need 73 runs to win from 21 overs at 3.48 runs per over.

Over 28: Three singles early in the over, and Symonds then makes no contact with a huge heave at a wide outside the off stump. Sangakkara whips the bails off with Symonds on the line. But the umpire doesn't refer it to the third umpire, and Sri Lanka are unlucky again.
    Australia 145/3 (RR: 5.18): Ponting 33* (41), Symonds 10* (21)
Australia need 82 runs to win from 22 overs at 3.73 runs per over.

QArnold is back into the attack.

Over 27: Symonds gets two through the covers, and Ponting is then almost run out backing up as Jayasuriya diverts the ball onto the stumps. It's almost identical to the one that saw Ian Bell run out by Jayasuriya, but on this occasion Ponting is given not out despite his bat bouncing into the air when the bails came off. Bell might be a bit annoyed if he sees that one.
    Australia 141/3 (RR: 5.22): Ponting 31* (37), Symonds 9* (19)
Australia need 86 runs to win from 23 overs at 3.74 runs per over.

Over 26: Symonds uses his strength to force the ball down the ground for a single, and Ponting then uses his guile to get four with a late cut placed to perfection between two fielders as Bandara drops a fraction short. Fine batting from an absolute master. Ponting works to leg for a single, and Symonds adds another straight down the ground after some good footwork to get down the pitch.
    Australia 139/3 (RR: 5.35): Ponting 31* (37), Symonds 7* (13)
Australia need 88 runs to win from 24 overs at 3.67 runs per over.

Over 25: Symonds works a very slow delivery from Jayasuriya through midwicket for two runs, and gets another single from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.
    Australia 132/3 (RR: 5.28): Ponting 26* (34), Symonds 5* (10)
Australia need 95 runs to win from 25 overs at 3.80 runs per over.

Over 24: Symonds pucnhes down the ground for a single to get off the mark, and Ponting leans on one and works to long-on for another. Symonds works to leg for another single from the final ball of a successful Bandara over.
    Australia 129/3 (RR: 5.38): Ponting 26* (34), Symonds 2* (4)
Australia need 98 runs to win from 26 overs at 3.77 runs per over.

    Symonds is the new batsman.

    WICKET!
    MJ Clarke c Dilshan b Bandara 23 (31)

Clarke goes for another cover drive, but hammers it straight to Dilshan at short cover who takes a fine low catch. Clarke stands his ground to wait for the umpires to confer and conclude the catch was taken cleanly. Looks like the right decision from some vaguely unhelpful replays.

Over 23: Jayasuriya keeps things tight as usual, conceding just two singles from the over.
    Australia 126/2 (RR: 5.48): Ponting 25* (33), Clarke 23* (30)
Australia need 101 runs to win from 27 overs at 3.74 runs per over.

Over 22: Two singles from the first two balls of the over, and Clarke then adds four with a top-class cover drive, using his feet to good effect against Bandara.
    Australia 124/2 (RR: 5.64): Ponting 24* (29), Clarke 22* (28)
Australia need 103 runs to win from 28 overs at 3.68 runs per over.

Over 21: As usual, play immediately becomes dull as the powerplay ends, with Australia milking four singles from Jayasuriya's first over.
    Australia 118/2 (RR: 5.62): Ponting 23* (28), Clarke 17* (23)
Australia need 109 runs to win from 29 overs at 3.76 runs per over.

Jayasuriya is into the attack with the powerplays completed.

Over 20: Ponting's determined to cash in on the final over of the powerplay, coming down the track to Bandara and smacking the ball over mid-off for four. Australia's captain gets two more with a deft late cut and then chips over midwicket for three more. Clarke cuts the last ball of the over to short third-man, and Ponting comes a long way down looking for a single. Clarke sends him back, and Tharanga's throw just misses the target. Bandara takes the bails off, but it needed a direct hit to remove Ponting.
    Australia 114/2 (RR: 5.70): Ponting 21* (26), Clarke 15* (19)
Australia need 113 runs to win from 30 overs at 3.77 runs per over.

Over 19: Clarke shows his class with back-to-back boundaries from classical cover drives, the first of which brings up Australia's 100.
    Australia 105/2 (RR: 5.53): Ponting 12* (21), Clarke 15* (16)
Australia need 122 runs to win from 31 overs at 3.94 runs per over.

Fernando is back into the attack for Sri Lanka.

Over 18: Bandara drops short to Ponting, who is quickly onto the back foot to whack the ball in front of point for four. Bandara bounces in well for the last five balls, as does his hair, and Ponting is kept on the defensive.
    Australia 97/2 (RR: 5.39): Ponting 12* (21), Clarke 7* (12)
Australia need 130 runs to win from 32 overs at 4.06 runs per over.

Over 17: Clarke gets his first boundary in streaky style with a thick edge to the third-man boundary. The ball bounces over the advertising hoards and disappears down the drain. Clarke wins a golfish, and the umpires go off in hunt of a new ball.
    Australia 93/2 (RR: 5.47): Ponting 8* (15), Clarke 7* (12)
Australia need 134 runs to win from 33 overs at 4.06 runs per over.

Over 16: Four singles from Bandara's first over, with the Australian batsmen doing well to maintain their focus in the face of Bandara's bouncing coiffured mullet.
    Australia 89/2 (RR: 5.56): Ponting 8* (15), Clarke 3* (6)
Australia need 138 runs to win from 34 overs at 4.06 runs per over.

Final powerplay taken straight away with Sri Lanka on top of the run-rate in the last few overs. Bandara is into the attack, along with his truly appalling haircut.

Over 15: Ponting guides to third-man for two runs, and then gets another single from a Kulasekara no-ball. Clarke blocks the final two balls of the second powerplay.
    Australia 85/2 (RR: 5.67): Ponting 6* (12), Clarke 1* (3)
Australia need 142 runs to win from 35 overs at 4.06 runs per over.

Over 14: Clarke is off the mark straight away with a single to midwicket, and Ponting works the final ball of the over through the legside for another run.
    Australia 81/2 (RR: 5.79): Ponting 3* (7), Clarke 1* (1)
Australia need 146 runs to win from 36 overs at 4.06 runs per over.

Clarke is the new batsman, and Australia may have to just be a bit more patient in their approach for a while. Taking the second powerplay not looking so daft now.

    WICKET!
    AC Gilchrist lbw b Arnold 30 (49)

The unlikely figure of Arnold has brought Sri Lanka back into the game, removing both openers in quick succession. There's only a half-hearted appeal as Arnold gets one to straighten and hit the pads, but it looks good enough for Aleem Dar, and the replays back him up. Not the best appeal from Sri Lanka, but they've got the wicket. There was bat involved, but after the ball hit the pad, so a good decision.

Over 13: Gilchrist works Kulasekara to leg for a single, and Ponting gets off the mark with a guide to third-man. Gilchrist plays out the over, and the fall of Hayden has at least given Sri Lanka a foothold in this game again.
    Australia 78/1 (RR: 6.00): Gilchrist 30* (48), Ponting 1* (3)
Australia need 149 runs to win from 37 overs at 4.03 runs per over.

Over 12: Ponting defends the final ball of a successful over for Sri Lanka.
    Australia 76/1 (RR: 6.33): Gilchrist 29* (44), Ponting 0* (1)
Australia need 151 runs to win from 38 overs at 3.97 runs per over.

    Ponting is the new batsman.

    WICKET!
    ML Hayden c Dilshan b Arnold 41 (30)

Hayden launches a huge six over long-on, but then holes out to midwicket looking to add another boundary. Hayden is furious with himself, because he was making batting look embarrassingly easy but has fallen to his first false shot.

    Arnold is into the attack.

Over 11: Kulasekara drops short to Hayden who smashes the ball over midwicket for another boundary, and then drives down the ground for another boundary. Hayden and Gilchrist now have more partnerships over 50 than any other opening pair in ODO history. The pair they've overtaken - Greenidge and Haynes - were handy bats. Both men get singles before the over ends to make it 10 runs from the over. Taking that second powerplay already looking an iffy decision.
    Australia 69/0 (RR: 6.27): Gilchrist 28* (42), Hayden 35* (27)
Australia need 158 runs to win from 39 overs at 4.05 runs per over.

Sri Lanka take the second powerplay, and bring Kulasekara into the attack.

Over 10: Hayden hammers a drive straight back to Maharoof who injures his thumb making the stop. Sri Lanka's speedy physio makes another appearance to strap the thumb and jogs off the field at what is, for him, a leisurely pace. The first ball after the delay is short, and Hayden helps himself to four over midwicket to bring up another 50 partnership between these two. The nextball is another long-hop and put away in even better style by Hayden, continuing his stellar form. Hayden pushes down the ground for a single, and Gilchrist gets two more with a cut to third-man. Australia's progress is delayed briefly by a streaker. And a streaker who hasn't grasped the nature of the job as, while clearly inebriated, he's fully clothed.
    Australia 59/0 (RR: 5.90): Gilchrist 27* (40), Hayden 26* (22)
Australia need 168 runs to win from 40 overs at 4.20 runs per over.

Over 9: Gilchrist starting to motor now, collecting two boundaries from Fernando's over, the first to third-man and the second pulled to fine-leg as Fernando bowls a very poor bouncer.
    Australia 48/0 (RR: 5.33): Gilchrist 25* (39), Hayden 17* (18)
Australia need 179 runs to win from 41 overs at 4.37 runs per over.

Over 8: Hayden gets three for a gorgeous late cut placed with precision between two fielders behind square on the offside. Gilchrist heaves the ball to long-on for a single. Hayden drives Maharoof hard to mid-off's left, and a slight misfield from Kulasekara allows Hayden to get back for a second. Australia going along very nicely here.
    Australia 40/0 (RR: 5.00): Gilchrist 17* (33), Hayden 17* (18)
Australia need 187 runs to win from 42 overs at 4.45 runs per over.

Over 7: A real mixed bag of an over from Fernando. There's the usual no-ball, but then Gilchrist is deceived by a slower ball and offers a sharp catching chance to Arnold at short cover, but the Sri Lankan can't hold on above his head. A full half-volley is clubbed down the ground for four before a cracking delivery squares Gilchrist up and he edges to third-man for two lucky runs.
    Australia 34/0 (RR: 4.86): Gilchrist 16* (31), Hayden 12* (14)
Australia need 193 runs to win from 43 overs at 4.49 runs per over.

Over 6: Sangakkara is up to the stumps, but that doesn't stop Hayden who hammers a big six over long-on after getting two through midwicket. Gilchrist got a single to start Hayden's onslaught.
    Australia 27/0 (RR: 4.50): Gilchrist 10* (24), Hayden 12* (14)
Australia need 200 runs to win from 44 overs at 4.55 runs per over.

Over 5: Another no-ball from Fernando, but it's not a bad over all told as there's just a Gilchrist single off the bat.
    Australia 18/0 (RR: 3.60): Gilchrist 9* (21), Hayden 4* (11)
Australia need 209 runs to win from 45 overs at 4.64 runs per over.

Over 4: Just a single from the over as Maharoof keeps it tight on off stump. Good bowling this from Sri Lanka since that first over.
    Australia 16/0 (RR: 4.00): Gilchrist 8* (15), Hayden 4* (10)
Australia need 211 runs to win from 46 overs at 4.59 runs per over.

Over 3: Much better over from Fernando, completing a maiden over to Hayden who looks rock solid in defence.
    Australia 15/0 (RR: 5.00): Gilchrist 7* (10), Hayden 4* (9)
Australia need 212 runs to win from 47 overs at 4.51 runs per over.

Over 2: Maharoof looks like starting with a maiden before offering Gilchrist a little bit of width outside off stump and getting driven to the boundary. Not the worst ball, and by no means a half-volley, but a glorious shot from Gilchrist.
    Australia 15/0 (RR: 7.50): Gilchrist 7* (10), Hayden 4* (3)
Australia need 212 runs to win from 48 overs at 4.42 runs per over.

Maharoof to share the new ball.

Over 1: Australia get off the mark with a wide down the legside thatSangakkara dives to gather in. Gilchrist then whips a no-ball from Fernando through midwicket for three, and Hayden then helps a legside full-toss to the fine-leg boundary. Fernando bowls another wide outside Hayden's off stump, and one more down the legside before finally completing an over at least as shambolic as any produced by Tait earlier in the piece.
    Australia 11/0 (RR: 11.00): Gilchrist 3* (4), Hayden 4* (3)
Australia need 216 runs to win from 49 overs at 4.41 runs per over.

Fernando to bowl the first over of the innings.

The Sri Lanka fielders are back out on the field as they attempt to defend a below-par total. Aussie openers Hayden and Gilchrist follow.

Sri Lanka: 226 all out (49.4 overs)
Australia need 227 to win at 4.54 runs per over

Only Silva and Jayawardene stood in Australia's way as wickets tumbled either side of their 140-run partnership. But some late-order hitting from Maharoof and Bandara has helped Sri Lanka get up to a reasonable total, but they're still short of what they would have wanted. Bracken was the star with the ball for Australia, bowling a fine spell of accurate swing bowling. Sri Lanka will do well to defend this total without their three key bowlers.

    WICKET!
    MF Maharoof c Symonds b Bracken 25 (22)
The new bat continues to work for Maharoof who lifts the first ball of the over back over Bracken's head and into the advertising boards for four. Maharoof gets four more two balls later with an edge between keeper and slip, but Bracken gets revenge next ball as the Sri Lanka all-rounder hits the ball down Symonds' throat at long-on. Four wickets for Bracken, a fine effort.

Over 49: Fernando is Sri Lanka's last man.
    Sri Lanka 218/9 (RR: 4.45): Maharoof 17* (18), Fernando 0* (0)

    WICKET!
    CM Bandara c Hogg b McGrath 17 (19)
Maharoof swaps his bat, and it seems a good move as he smashes a boundary straight down the ground. A narked McGrath then bowls a no-ball before Maharoof gets another boundary with a thick inside edge to the fine-leg fence. Maharoof levers the ball to deep midwicket for another single, and Bandara then backs away and chops the ball into the offside for a single. Maharoof hits hard into the legside for another single before McGrath's foul mood is lightened a fraction by a wicket from his final ball as Bandara lobs the ball into the legside where Hogg takes a sitter.

Over 48: Maharoof gets a single down the ground, and Bandara smites his second huge six in his short innings. This one disappears over long-on, and it's an entertaining little cameo now. Bandara tries to sweep the next ball, misses and gets a leg-bye as Clarke appeals confidently but forlornly for lbw. Maharoof gets another single from the final ball of another good over for the batting side.
    Sri Lanka 206/8 (RR: 4.29): Maharoof 7* (12), Bandara 16* (17)

McGrath storms to fine-leg engaged in lengthy and foul-mouthed conversation with himself. Clarke back into the attack late doors.

Over 47: Bandara surprises everyone, not least himself, by levering McGrath over midwicket for a huge six. Indeed, he's so giddy he then misses out on a full-toss from a McGrath in full chunter mode. Bandara gets another single down the ground which serves only to darken Pigeon's mood further. Maharoof makes it eight from the over with another single from the final ball.
    Sri Lanka 197/8 (RR: 4.19): Maharoof 5* (10), Bandara 10* (14)

McGrath is back into the attack.

Over 46: Maharoof pushes to cover for a single, and Bandara punches down the ground for another. That's all the Sri Lankans can get from Bracken in that over.
    Sri Lanka 189/8 (RR: 4.11): Maharoof 4*(9), Bandara 3* (9)

Over 45: Maharoof gets a single off Tait, and Bandara gets two with a good-looking drive that has Symonds sprawling to stop at mid-off. He gets a hand to it, and undoubtedly saved two there. Whenever Tait gets driven, the response is always either a bouncer or a wide. On this occasion, bouncer. Good over from Tait though - just three runs coming from it.
    Sri Lanka 187/8 (RR: 4.16): Maharoof 3* (5), Bandara 2* (7)

Over 44: Bandara plays out the last three balls of the over, a wicket-maiden for Bracken who has been top-drawer today.
    Sri Lanka 184/8 (RR: 4.28): Maharoof 2* (3), Bandara 0* (3)

Malinga Bandara is Sri Lanka's number 10.

    WICKET!
    KMDN Kulasekara c Hayden b Bracken 1 (5)

Bracken beats Kulasekera twice in succession before finding the outside edge. With Hayden stationed at slip to take the simple catch it's another deserved wicket for Bracken and reward for bold captaincy from Ponting to have a slip at this stage.

Bracken is back into the attack.

Over 43: Tait gets away with a ball down the legside that should surely have been called wide, and that is followed by a leg-stump half-volley that Kulasekera clips away for a single.
    Sri Lanka 184/7 (RR: 4.28): Maharoof 2* (3), Kulasekera 1* (2)

Nuwan Kulasekera is the new batsman for Sri Lanka.

    WICKET!
    RP Arnold b Tait 3 (10)

Tait is enjoying this latest spell. A couple of singles and a wide are followed by a fast short ball that Arnold chops into his stumps. Sri Lanka crumbling away here, and Australia showing again why they are the best in the world.

Over 42: Maharoof gets off the mark with a slightly stop-start but ultimately safe single from his second ball. Arnold gets another single from the final ball of a tidy over from Clarke. All momentum has gone from the innings now.
    Sri Lanka 180/6 (RR: 4.29): Arnold 2* (7), Maharoof 1* (2)

    Clarke into the attack again.

Over 41: Farveez Maharoof is the new batsman for Sri Lanka, who are in danger of throwing away a great position, much as England did against Australia earlier in the tournament.
    Sri Lanka 178/6 (RR: 4.34): Arnold 1* (3), Maharoof 0* (0)

    WICKET!
    TM Dilshan c Hodge b Tait 7 (12)

And Tait does get some joy late in the piece. Four runs from the first five balls of the over, but Dilshan makes a horrible mess of an attempted pull at the final ball, lobbing a simple catch to Brad Hodge at midwicket. Brave captaincy from Ponting to bring him back, and it's paid off.

Tait is back into the attack. Maybe he'll get some joy against two new batsmen.

Over 40: Arnold blocks the last two balls of the over, and that ends a fine spell of bowling from Hogg including two key wickets.
    Sri Lanka 174/5 (RR: 4.35): Dilshan 4* (7), Arnold 0* (2)

Russel Arnold is the new batsman for Sri Lanka, who are back in a bit of bother.

    WICKET!
DPMD Jayawardene st Gilchrist b Hogg 72 (88)

Massive breakthrough for Australia, and Hogg has removed the two set batsmen in successive over. Jayawardene just overbalances stretching for the googly, and Gilchrist has the bails off with the batsman short of his ground.

Over 39: Four singles from Clarke's over as Sri Lanka look to bounce back.
    Sri Lanka 173/4 (RR: 4.44): Jayawardene 72* (87), Dilshan 3* (4)

Over 38: Dilshan is off the mark straight away with a single to midwicket, and Jayawardene shovels to leg for another single.
    Sri Lanka 169/4 (RR: 4.45): Jayawardene 70* (84), Dilshan 1* (1)

Tillakaratne Dilshan is the new batsman.

    WICKET!
    LPC Silva c Clarke b Hogg 64 (107)

The140-run partnership is finally broken as Silva gets a top edge to a sweep, giving Clarke a simple catch on the 45. Good innings from Silva who came in with his side in desperate trouble, but it's also deserved reward for Hogg who has again bowled well.

Over 37: A couple of single early in Clarke's over, and Jayawardene then adds two with a chipped drive over cover. But just the four runs from the over, so not a bad one from Clarke there.
    Sri Lanka 167/3 (RR: 4.51): Jayawardene 69* (81), Silva 64* (105)

Over 36: Four singles from the first five balls of Hogg's over, and Jayawardene makes it a very good one for Sri Lanka by getting three from the final ball with a delicious late cut. If only Sri Lanka had picked some bowlers. Might have had a good close game then.
    Sri Lanka 163/3 (RR: 4.53): Jayawardene 66* (77), Silva 63* (103)

Over 35: Silva cuts hard behind point but has to settle for three as Mike Hussey makes a sprawling stop on the fence. Three singles follow before Silva gets two more with a fine sweep on the legside. Sri Lanka motoring at the moment.
    Sri Lanka 156/3 (RR: 4.46): Jayawardene 61* (74), Silva 61* (100)

Clarke back into the attack in place of the expensive and ineffective Tait.

Drinks. Great fightback from Sri Lanka here, with Jayawardene and Silva playing cdontrasting but effective innings. Tait has been absolutely woeful today, and the gamble on the third powerplay from Ponting backfired dramatically.

Over 34: Three singles from the first four balls of the over, and Jayawardene then gets three with a well-placed square cut behind square. Silva adds a single from the final ball of the over, and Hogg has failed to slow the run-rate there.
    Sri Lanka 148/3 (RR: 4.35): Jayawardene 59* (72), Silva 55* (96)

Hogg back into the attack. He bowled boringly but tidily earlier, and Ponting will want more of the same.

Over 33: Silva pushes a single to follow his captain to a half-century, and Jayawardene drives to deep cover for another easy run. Silva carves to deep point for one more before a rapid short ball from Tait hits Jayawardene on the elbow as he tries to hook, one leg-bye the result. Silva again drives into the covers for a single and Jayawardene times the last ball sweetly through midwicket for two more. Only seven off that over, which has to count as a success for Tait on today's evidence. And one of them was a leg-bye.
    Sri Lanka 141/3 (RR: 4.27): Jayawardene 55* (69), Silva 52* (93)

    Silva 50: 91 balls, 6 x 4s

The powerplays are over, but that last one was a good one for Sri Lanka, who scored 32 runs without loss in that five-over stint. Most of those came off Tait, who surprisingly stays in the attack for another over.

Over 32: Bracken beats Silva twice in succession outside off stump, both well taken by Gilchrist up to the stumps. Silva finally gets a single from the fifth ball of the over, and Jayawardene is then beaten by the final ball of an excellent comeback over.
    Sri Lanka 134/3 (RR: 4.19): Jayawardene 52* (66), Silva 49* (90)

Bracken is back into the attack for the final over of the powerplay.

Over 31: Silva pushes to point for a single, and Jayawardene gets four more with a flick over short fine-leg for a one-bounce four. Tait responds in his usual way with a big wide down the legside and Jayawardene get to 50 in brilliant style with a mighty pull high over deep square-leg for a massive six. He adds a couple from the final ball of the over, and Tait has gone for 51 runs in his six wicketless overs.
    Sri Lanka 133/3 (RR: 4.29): Jayawardene 52* (65), Silva 48* (85)

    Jayawardene 50: 64 balls, 5 x 4s, 1 x 6

Over 30: Gilchrist is standing up to McGrath now to keep Jayawardene from repeating the shot he played in Pigeon's last over. He instead nurdles a single to leg, and Silva gets another with a pull shot before Jayawardene gets a clever boundary with a pre-meditated paddle to the vacant fine-leg fence. McGrath is not amused.
    Sri Lanka 119/3 (RR: 3.97): Jayawardene 40* (60), Silva 47* (84)

Over 29: Tait overpitches outside the off stump and is driven dismissively through the covers for four runs by Silva. Tait does drag the over back pretty well in fairness, even managing not to bowl any dirty great wides down the legside.
    Sri Lanka 113/3 (RR: 3.90): Jayawardene 35* (55), Silva 46* (83)

This is a risk. Tait back into the attack with the powerplay in effect.

Over 28: McGrath starts his spell with a bouncer that Silva ducks underneath. He gets a single next ball, and Jayawardene gets a lucky two with a mistimed pull that just clears the fielder at midwicket. Nothing lucky about the next attacking shot, though, Jayawardene taking advantage of the powerplay to hit McGrath in the air straight down the ground for a one-bounce four.
    Sri Lanka 109/3 (RR: 3.89): Jayawardene 36* (55), Silva 42* (77)

Australia now take the final powerplay, and McGrath is back into the attack.

Over 27: Silva gets another single from a hard sweep, and Jayawardene adds another with a drive to deep point. Silva sweeps Clarke fine on the legside for two runs to bring up Sri Lanka's 100, and then adds another quick single into the covers.
    Sri Lanka 102/3 (RR: 3.78): Jayawardene 29* (52), Silva 41* (74)

Over 26: Jayawardene works to leg for a single, before Silva collects four good runs with a powerful sweep shot hammered dead square. Another sweep from the final ball of Hogg's over gets Silva just a single this time.
    Sri Lanka 97/3 (RR: 3.73): Jayawardene 28* (50), Silva 37* (70)

Over 25: Jayawardene plays a paddle-sweep fine on the legside for a single, but Silva can add no more to that, so Clarke will be very happy with that over.
    Sri Lanka 91/3 (RR: 3.64): Jayawardene 27* (49), Silva 32* (65)

Over 24: Jayawardene pulls through midwicket for a couple before adding a single to third-man as Hogg offers some width. Silva sweeps hard into the legside for a single, and Jayawardene repeats the shot with the same result.
    Sri Lanka 90/3 (RR: 3.75): Jayawardene 26* (47), Silva 32* (61)

Over 23: Iffy start from Clarke, starting with two balls outside the off stump that Silva works away for a pair of twos. Clarke ends the over well though with four dot balls, one oof which almost traps Silva leg-before, the batsman just getting an inside edge to the ball.
    Sri Lanka 85/3 (RR: 3.70): Jayawardene 22* (43), Silva 31* (59)

With Hogg's spin proving effective at stemming the runs, Ponting turns to Michael Clarke's left-armers.

Over 22: Hogg proving hard to get away here, but after five dot balls Jayawardene is able to cut the final ball behind point for two runs as hogg drops a fraction short.
    Sri Lanka 81/3 (RR: 3.68): Jayawardene 22* (43), Silva 27* (53)

Over 21: The first ball is too straight from Symonds and Silva deflects it nice and fine on the legside for four. Another leg-stump ball is worked to leg for a single by Silva, and that brings up the 50 partnership. Symonds oversteps as he strives for some rhythm, and is paddled away for a legside single by Jayawardene.
    Sri Lanka 79/3 (RR: 3.76): Jayawardene 20* (37), Silva 27* (53)

Over 20: Jayawardene shovels Hogg into the legside for a single, and Silva gets another from the final ball of another dreary but effective over from Hogg.
    Sri Lanka 72/3 (RR: 3.60): Jayawardene 19* (33), Silva 22* (50)

Over 19: Jayawardene gets a single, and Silva collects two more with a flick to fine-leg where McGrath's nifty footwork prevents the boundary. Another tidy over from Symonds as we enter the compulsory dull period that all one-day international innings are contractually obliged to include.
    Sri Lanka 70/3 (RR: 3.68): Jayawardene 18* (30), Silva 21* (47)

Over 18: Jayawardene pulls to leg for a single, but Silva can get nothing from the remaining five, and Hogg has made a nice, tidy start here.
    Sri Lanka 67/3 (RR: 3.72): Jayawardene 17* (28), Silva 19* (43)

Over 17: Three singles from the first four balls of Symonds' spell, and Silva then gets an overthrow bonus after taking the fourth single of the over. Sloppy stuff from Australia there as McGrath's throw sails over Gilchrist with no-one backing up.
    Sri Lanka 66/3 (RR: 3.88): Jayawardene 16* (27), Silva 19* (38)

Andrew Symonds is into the attack.

Over 16: Each batsman collects a single from the first two balls of the over, but Hogg ends it with four dot balls as Silva defends.
    Sri Lanka 61/3 (RR: 3.81): Jayawardene 14* (24), Silva 16* (35)

Ponting delays the final powerplay, bringing Brad Hogg into the attack.

Drinks. Fascinating start to this game. Tait has been dreadful, but Bracken and McGrath's exceptional efforts have kept Australia in the wickets and in control of the run-rate. Jayawardene and Silva are doing a decent rebuilding job here, but there's plenty more work to be done.

Over 15: Silva hits a drive straight back to Tait, who fails to gather and allows a single. Tait bowls another wide down the legside, and Jayawardene gathers two more with a drive behind point and a single from a push down the ground. Silva gets a single from the final ball of the over, another expensive one from Tait.
    Sri Lanka 59/3 (RR: 3.93): Jayawardene 13* (23), Silva 15* (30)

Over 14: Jayawardene cuts McGrath to third-man for a single, and Silva adds another with a deliberate guide to the same fielder. Just two runs from McGrath's over, stemming the flow of runs after a couple of good overs for Sri Lanka.
    Sri Lanka 53/3 (RR: 3.79): Jayawardene 10* (20), Silva 13* (27)

Over 13: Immediate good fortune for Tait whose first ball is a leg-stump half volley that Silva hits hard but straight to square-leg. No luck a couple of balls later though, as Silva edges a rapid delivery over the solitary slip for a boundary. A short, wide ball from Tait is met with a classic square-cut that races to the boundary and Tait is leaking runs again. He tries to bowl a bouncer, but it's down the legside and called wide by Doctrove. Tait finally does complete the over by beating the bat, but he's still going for nine an over.
    Sri Lanka 51/3 (RR: 3.92): Jayawardene 9* (17), Silva 12* (24)

Tait is back into the attack after two expensive overs at the top of the innings.

Over 12: Glorious shot from Jayawardene, smashing a pull shot through square-leg as McGrath fails to get enough height on the attempted bouncer. Jayawardene gets less convincing boundary two balls later, gloving an attempted hook down to the fine-leg fence. Expensive over for McGrath, who is chuntering on in typical style as he collects his cap from the umpire.
    Sri Lanka 42/3 (RR: 3.50): Jayawardene 9* (17), Silva 4* (18)

Over11: Jayawardene gets a single from the second ball and Silva is beaten twice pushing at balls outside the off stump. Another fine over from Bracken, who has once again done a fine job exploiting conditions in the opening overs.
    Sri Lanka 34/3 (RR: 3.09): Jayawardene 1* (11), Silva 4* (18)

No surprise to see Australia take the second powerplay.

Over 10: Rare half-volley from McGrath, and Silva doesn't miss out, driving sweetly down the ground for a quality boundary. The rest of the over is standard McGrath fare, and Silva defends.
    Sri Lanka 33/3 (RR: 3.30): Jayawardene 0* (9), Silva 4* (14)

Over 9: Another maiden over from Bracken, and Sri Lanka are right under the cosh.
    Sri Lanka 29/3 (RR: 3.22): Jayawardene 0* (9), Silva 0* (8)

Over 8: Not for the first time in his career, McGrath bowls an immacculate maiden over to a new batsman.
    Sri Lanka 29/3 (RR: 3.63): Jayawardene 0* (3), Silva 0* (8)

Over 7: Bracken bowls a rare bad ball, a wide down the legside, but follows with a good one that Silva leaves as it comes back. A leg-bye ends the over.
    Sri Lanka 29/3 (RR: 4.14): Jayawardene 0* (3), Silva 0* (2)

Chamara Silva is the new batsman for Sri Lanka.

    WICKET!
    WU Tharanga c Hayden b Bracken 6 (22)

Another wicket falls, and Sri Lanka are in all sorts of trouble now. It's a classic Bracken dismissal, finding the outside edge with the outswinger, and Matthew Hayden completing the formalities with a safe low catch at slip.

Over 6: McGrath greets Jayawardene with a fine bouncer, but the Sri Lanka skipper survives.
    Sri Lanka 27/2 (RR: 4.50): Tharanga 6* (18), Jayawardene 0* (3)

Jayawardene is the new batsman with his team in trouble early on here.

    WICKET!
    KC Sangakkara lbw b McGrath 0 (4)

Tharanga gets a single before McGrath gets a huge wicket from a poor decision. Good ball, straightening on Sangakkara and pinning him in front of the stumps, but it was probably going over the top.

Tait is out of the attack after a wayward two-over spell, with the more accurate if less pacy Glenn McGrath into the attack.

Over 5: Sangakkara plays out the over in watchful defence, so Bracken gets a wicket-maiden with just a leg-bye coming from that over.
    Sri Lanka 26/1 (RR: 5.20): Tharanga 5* (16), Sangakkara 0* (3)

Kumar Sangakkara is the new batsman at number three.

    WICKET!
    ST Jayasuriya lbw b Bracken 12 (12)

Big wicket for Australia as Bracken gets Jayasuriya with the one that goes straight on rather than swinging away, trapping the left-hander in front of middle. Simple decision for Billy Doctrove.

Over 4: Cracking duel here between Tait and Jayasuriya. The first ball is a well-directed bouncer that Jayasuriya takes on, top-edging the ball over Gilchrist for a one-bounce four that almost carried for six. The next ball is a yorker and a huge lbw shout but it's missing leg. The next one is a wide that has Gilchrist scrambling, and then Jayasuriya punches down the ground for two and then a single. Tharanga gets a single to end another wayward over from Tait.
    Sri Lanka 25/0 (RR: 6.25): Tharanga 5* (15), Jayasuriya 12* (10)

Over 3: Another thick inside edge gets Tharanga a single, and the next ball from Bracken flicks off Jayasuriya's pads for a leg-bye as Bracken gets his line wrong. Tharanga blocks the rest of the over as Bracken gets the radar working.
    Sri Lanka 16/0 (RR: 5.33): Tharanga 4* (13), Jayasuriya 5* (6)

Over 2: Tait oversteps as he strives to get something out of this pitch, which offers him a lot less than the one in Barbados did. Tait then flings one way down the legside, giving Adam Gilchrist absolutely no chance and conceding five wides. The next ball is back on line, but Tharanga gets a thick inside edge into the legside for a single, and Jayasuriya pushes to cover for another. Tharanga gets another single before Tait ends a wild opening over witha rapid bouncer that has Jayasuriya ducking.
    Sri Lanka 14/0 (RR: 7.00): Tharanga 3* (8), Jayasuriya 5* (5)

Shaun Tait to share the new ball.

Over 1: Bracken beats Tharanga with a swinging delivery, but Tharanga then gets off the mark with a thick outside edge to third-man. Bracken pitches up looking for the swing, but Jayasuriya thumps it through point for four runs to open his account in fine style.
    Sri Lanka 5/0 (RR: 5.00): Tharanga 1* (3), Jayasuriya 4* (3)

Nathan Bracken will open the bowling for the Aussies.

Australia's players are out on the field. While Sri Lanka will have a makeshift opening bowling attack today, there usual opening batting duo of Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga are in action.

Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat first. Interesting team selection from Sri Lanka - no Malinga, no Vaas and no Murali.

That's just three of the best half-dozen bowlers in this tournament out then. But it's got absolutely nothing to do with Sri Lanka hoping to avoid playing Australia again in the semi-finals of course.
