Anthony McGrath has backed wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy to make an impression for Yorkshire in his first season at Headingley.

Brophy, the 30-year-old South African who holds a British passport, arrived at the club from Northamptonshire after agreeing a two-year contract.

Although Brophy struggled latterly for first-team appearances at Northampton, McGrath believes he is a useful addition to the Yorkshire squad following their promotion from Division Two last season.

McGrath said: "He's probably been a bit unlucky with a few injuries. He played for Northants and when he was just getting established he picked them up - including against us last season.

"So his opportunities have been limited. But he is a very talented player and has been very impressive in training.

"After playing against him and with him, the players know what he can do - so we're hoping he can continue that for us."

Yorkshire will welcome Darren Lehmann back to the club and have also signed his fellow Australian Jason Gillespie, although the fast bowler is currently on international duty in Fatullah against Bangladesh.

With Michael Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard expected to fulfil England duties during the summer, McGrath expects younger players at the club to be given the opportunity to shine.

"We've got some good young players coming through," added the 30-year-old batting all-rounder, who has played for England himself in his time.

"A few are untested at county level. But the great thing about the sport is that they will get the chance when the internationals are on duty.

"They're all confident lads, and it gives them a chance to prove themselves. It will be a test of the squad if we get injuries - but it also offers the opportunity for someone to make a star of themselves."
