1138: Close of play

Pakistan, 1st innings 300 for four

Pakistan have had much the better of things since lunchtime but they pressed home their advantage in some style in this final session thanks to Shahid Afridi's astonishing assault.

He's 67 not out at the close from just 62 balls and has almost caught up his skipper, with Inzamam unbeaten on 80 from 159 deliveries.

It all makes it desperately hard to understand how there wasn't a place for Afridi in the Pakistan side for the first Test, given that he scored over 200 runs and took six wickets in the team's previous two-match tour to the West Indies.

It was hard to criticise England before tea but skipper Michael Vaughan's drop of Afridi midway through the final session is proving horribly expensive and it's clear that on such a placid pitch England simply can't afford such misses.

1138: Over 80 There's a moral victory to Hoggard as he gets some swing straight away with the new ball and twice beats Afridi outside his off stump. He can't find the edge though until a thick outside edge from the last ball of the over takes Pakistan on to 300 for four. That proves to be the last action of the day as the light is now offered and the batsmen understandably accept.

1134: England waste no time in taking the new ball ahead of the 81st over which will be bowled by Hoggard.

1133: Over 80 More frustration for England as Afridi shows he has guile as well as power by guiding Flintoff through the vacant slips area for another boundary. It's 296 for four at the end of the over.

1129: Udal didn't last long from the Pavilion End as he's replaced by Flintoff.

1128: Over 79 Five runs come off that over from Giles but there was an opportunity for a run out for England after a mix-up between Inzamam and Afridi - however a poor throw from Flintoff sees the chance go begging. Pakistan are 290 for four.

1124: Over 78 Vaughan springs another shock as Udal switches ends and comes on for Hoggard. It doesn't exactly go to plan for England as Afridi lashes his fourth six of the innings - a towering blow which lands way up in the stands. It nearly pays off though when Inzamam tries to match Afridi but completely miscues his shot and almost holes out to Hoggard at long-off. The news gets worse for England as the sun has just come out from behind the clouds again.

1120: Over 77 Giles restores a level of control as 'just' four runs come off the first over of his latest spell. Pakistan are now 275 for four and the close might not be far away as the sun has gone behind the clouds.

1118: Udal has been hit out of the attack and he's replaced by Ashley Giles - who has gone for four sixes himself today.

1117: Over 76 Inzamam gets in on the act as he again splits the offside field for another boundary. He then takes a single which brings Afridi onto strike, just two short of his fifty. He wastes little time in reaching that landmark as a big inside edge into the legside brings him two runs. It's been an incredible innings and really grabbed back all the momentum for Pakistan.

1116: Afridi 50: 46 balls, 4x4, 3x6

1112: Over 75 Afridi looks like he's going to make the most of that let-off in the last over as he launches Udal for a massive straight six. He then takes a single to bring up the fifty partnership and when he gets back on strike he sweeps Udal from outside off stump for another six over square leg. At the end of the over Pakistan have galloped on to 264 for four and Afridi is unbeaten on 48 for just 44 balls.

1107: Over 74 Hoggard's first ball is carved out to the sweeper on the cover boundary for a single by Afridi and then Inzamam again shows his willingness today to take a sharp run to add one more to the total. It's at that point though that a slower ball from Hoggard sees Afridi loft it in the air to Vaughan at short cover but the England skipper inexplicably spills the chance. Afridi clatters the final ball of the over for four to rub salt into the wounds.

1102: There's a bowling change from England as Hoggard takes over from Harmison.

1101: Over 73 Afridi collects a straight-driven single from the first ball of Udal's over and Inzamam then dances down the wicket but is only able to drive it straight back on the ground to the bowler. He then resorts to a sweep off the penultimate ball for a single and Afridi does exactly the same off the last delivery to keep the strike and take the score on to 243 for four.

1057: Over 72 Afridi connects sweetly with another short delivery from Harmison, pulling it to square leg for four. But he then completely mistimes his next shot as he tries to repeat the trick - but gets away with it as it goes wide of Udal at mid-wicket. It's 240 for four at the end of the over.

1053: Over 71 It's 235 for four after another relatively subdued over from Udal. Afridi paddle sweeps for two and then collects a single as three runs come off it.

1047: Over 70 Decent tactics from Harmison as he digs the ball in short to Afridi and it's only from a slower delivery on the last ball that the Pakistan all-rounder is able to add to his tally, slashing it out to the sweeper on the cover boundary for a single. It's 232 for four and we've now got the mid-session drinks break.

1043: Over 69 Udal understandably doesn't give the ball a great deal of air and just two runs - a single to each batsman - come off a decent over.

1041: A brave move from Vaughan as he brings on Udal for Flintoff. At least he's bowling to Inzamam to start with!

1040: Over 68 Harmison drops short to Afridi who hooks powerfully but is denied another four by a fantastic one-handed stop by Strauss on the square leg boundary. Inzamam then tries to pull another short ball but is rapped on his back leg and has to survive an lbw shout. He cuts for a single off the last ball to push Pakistan on to 229 for four.

1035: Over 67 Afridi has to content himself with just a single from Flintoff but that brings Inzamam onto strike and a magnificent piece of timing and placement (between deep fine leg and deep square leg) brings him another boundary. It's 227 for four at the end of the over.

1030: Over 66 It's almost the perfect scenario for the packed Faisalabad crowd - Inzamam batting with Afridi. And the latter gives them what they want with a towering six over long-on off Harmison as eight runs come off the over and the score rockets on to 222 for four. Afridi is now 19 not out from 12 deliveries!

1025: Over 65 The noise levels continue to go up as Inzamam completes his 42nd Test fifty with a single. That's the only run off Flintoff's over and it's 214 for four.

1023: Inzamam 50: 117 balls, 5x4

1021: Over 64 The recalled Shahid Afridi gets a fantastic ovation as he comes out to join Inzamam - and it doesn't take long to see why. He hits his second ball straight over the top for a one-bounce four, then hammers two more thumping boundaries from the next two deliveries. It's 213 for four at the end of a dramatic over which featured Bell's first Test wicket, though TV replays are casting a little bit of doubt on the catch.

1018: WICKET!
Mohammad Yousuf c & b Bell 78
A stunning catch off his own bowling from Bell gives England the all-important breakthrough. However there's a moment of controversy as Yousuf isn't sure whether the ball, which was taken low down by Bell, had arried. The umpires are in agreement though and he's eventually on his way back to the pavilion, with Pakistan on 201 for four.

1016: Over 63 Inzamam again finds the gap through extra cover and the ball races away to the boundary for four. It takes Pakistan past the 200 mark and also nudges the skipper up to 49. He's then denied his fifty off the next ball when a fine bit of fielding at point from Strauss prevents a single.

1010: Over 62 A lovely late cut from Inzamam sees him register the first boundary after tea and he and Yousuf then collect three singles between them as seven runs come off Bell's over. It's 197 for three.

1007: Part-time bowler Ian Bell, who got plenty of swing earlier in the day, will bowl the second over after tea.

1006: Over 61 The first ball after tea from Flintoff is a beauty but it doesn't quite catch the edge of Inzamam's bat. The Pakistan captain tucks the next ball off his legs towards mid-wicket for a single and four dot balls to Yousuf round off the over. It's 190 for three.

1003: The players are back out on the pitch for the evening session and Andy Flintoff will bowl the first over after tea.

0943: End of session

Pakistan, 1st innings 189 for three

Pakistan have hit back well in that session by taking the score from 87 for three to 189 for three.

Inzamam (38 not out) and Yousuf (77 not out) were rightly circumspect early on as they started to rebuild things but have accelerated since then and put their side back into a decent position.

England didn't do too much wrong and had a couple of decent leg before shouts, but Geraint Jones will rue not taking a difficult chance off Yousuf.

0943: Over 60 The fourth six off Giles today rounds off a great afternoon session for Pakistan. Yousuf comes down the wicket and lofts him over long-off to take the score to 189 for three at the break.

0939: Ashley Giles come on for Harmison to bowl what will be the last over before tea.

0938: Over 59 Flintoff is doing everything he can to break up this partnership - he even tries an unorthodox delivery in that over with his left arm down by his side but it simply brings a forward defensive stroke and a smile from Yousuf. He then comes round the wicket to Inzamam but can't still spark a wicket. Just one run was added to Pakistan's total which is now 181 for three.

0934: Over 58 Harmison is continually spearing the ball into Inzamam's pads but the Pakistan skipper gets his bat on every delivery - if he were to miss one then he'd be in real danger of an lbw decision. Just the one run came off that over so Pakistan are now 180 for three.

0929: Over 57 There's just the one run, which comes at the start of Flintoff's over when Yousuf drives into the covers. The over featured a leg before shout against Inzamam but it looked far too high and is ruled 'not out'.

0925: Flintoff is going to take over from Hoggard as we come towards the end of the afternoon session.

0924: Over 56 Harmison again puts a brake on the scoring as just a couple of singles come from that over. It's 178 for three.

0920: Over 55 The over starts well for Hoggard who finds the inside edge of Yousuf's bat but it spirals downhill after that as three boundaries follow. The first goes down to fine leg after the Yorkshireman drifts down leg side, the next squirts towards the vacant third man area and the final one is the best of the lot - a lovely drive which beats extra cover. It's 176 for three at the end of the over and Yousuf has raced on to 65.

0915: Over 54 Yousuf brings up his fifty with a fine drive which beats a diving Udal at extra cover and rockets away to the boundary. There's a good response from Harmison though who almost gets one through Yousuf's defences, the batsman getting an inside edge onto his pad. Pakistan are 164 for three at the end of the over.

0911: Yousuf 50: 113 balls, 5x4, 1x6

0910: As we suspected there's a bowling change as Harmison takes over from Bell.

0909: Over 53 A decent over from Hoggard sees just the one single as Yousuf plays it into the offside and moves to within two runs of his fifty. It's 159 for three.

0904: Over 52 A glorious straight drive for four from Yousuf and then a cracking cover drive for a single could signal the end of Bell's spell. It's 158 for three after that over.

0901: Over 51 There are two runs off the first ball of Hoggard's latest spell, Inzamam turning the ball to deep mid-wicket to bring up the 150. It's almost an action replay from the final delivery of the over and Pakistan move on to 153 for three.

0857: We've seen a bit of swing in the last ten minutes so it's no surprise that Vaughan decides to replace Udal with Hoggard.

0856: Over 50 Bell gets more movement in the air as a yorker causes Yousuf problems but he does well to dig it out. Yousuf then produces a perfect response as a lovely on drive from the next delivery brings him four runs. It's 149 for three at the end of the 50th over.

0852: Over 49 Inzamam gets a thick inside edge to Udal's first ball and though he picks up two runs, this is a shaky passage of play for Pakistan. They get things back on track with four easy singles to end the over on 143 for three.

0849: Over 48 Bell's first delivery drifts in to Yousuf and there's another lbw appeal but it was probably just outside the line and is rightly turned down by Simon Taufel. He should have had a wicket later in the over though when a ball down leg side catches the face of Yousuf's bat but 'keeper Geraint Jones can't cling on to it. That was a good maiden over from Bell who seems to be getting a bit of reverse swing.

0843: Over 47 A better over from Udal and the feature of it was a big shout for leg before against Inzamam. The Pakistan skipper had rocked back and tried to play the ball through the leg side but was caught on his back leg right in front of the stumps. Umpire Darrell Hair says 'not out' - the only question mark could have been over the height. It's 137 for three and there will now be a short break for drinks.

0839: Over 46 An interesting first over from Bell. It's a little wayward but there's a bit of swing and given that Vaughan's got everything right today so far - apart from the toss - who are we to doubt the wisdom of giving Bell a bowl? Just the one run came off it so Pakistan are on 136 for three.

0837: There's a surprising move from Vaughan as he throws the ball to Ian Bell who will take over from Flintoff.

0836: Over 45 Pakistan continue to make steady progress but, after a couple of singles, Udal drops one too short and is punished by Inzamam who clobbers the ball over mid-wicket for four. It's 135 for three.

0833: Over 44 Yousuf guides a slightly wide delivery from Flintoff to the vacant third man boundary for four. Inzamam picked up a single earlier in the over so it's 129 for three at the end of it.

0828: Over 43 It's a maiden from Udal but he hasn't really caused too many problems to this pair as yet.

0825: Over 42 Flintoff finds the edge of Inzamam's bat but it doesn't quite carry to Andrew Strauss in the slips - it was only a fraction short though. The fifty partnership (from 116 balls) comes when Inzamam rocks back and plays Flintoff out towards square leg. Another run comes from the final delivery when Flintoff attempts a yorker but it's a fraction too full and is driven into the covers by Yousuf. Pakistan are 124 for three.

0820: Over 41 Udal's line isn't quite right for his first ball and he's turned towards fine leg for a single by Yousuf. Inzamam then repeats the trick so it's 122 for three at the end of the over.

0817: Over 40 Flintoff digs one in short to Inzamam but it's swatted away with ease to the square leg boundary for four. Five runs in total came from the over and Pakistan are 120 for three

0813: Over 39 Udal pitches a fraction short with his first delivery and Inzamam crashes him through the covers for two runs. However the Hampshire veteran then bowls five dot balls so it's 115 for three at the end of the over.

0810: Shaun Udal is going to get his first bowl of the day, replacing Harmison.

0809: Over 38 Inzamam drives Flintoff's first ball firmly but is denied a run by a sharp piece of fielding at mid-off by Udal. He sprints through for a single off the penultimate ball though to take his side on to 113 for three.

0804: Over 37 The first boundary of the day comes off Harmison when he's cover driven for four by Yousuf. There are then two more runs from the final delivery after a rare misfield at mid-wicket by Flintoff. Pakistan are 112 for three.

0801: Over 36 It's a frustrating over for Yousuf who is twice denied more runs by some good field placing but he does finally get a single off the last ball of Flintoff's over to nudge Pakistan into 106 for three.

0756: Giles has been taken out of the attack after just one over. He's being replaced by Flintoff.

0755: Over 35 There's a leg bye off the first ball of Harmison's over but just one run off the bat when Yousuf flicks the fourth delivery off his legs and down to fine leg. It's 105 for three.

0751: Over 34 Giles pitches too short and Inzamam takes full advantage as he cuts him for four. That takes Pakistan onto the 100 mark. The Pakistan skipper then sweeps the final delivery for three more so it's 103 for three at the end of the over.

0747: Over 33 Harmison carries on exactly where he left off before the lunch interval as he bowls his fourth maiden of the day. He now has figures of 8-4-7-1.

0745: Steve Harmison will bowl the second over after lunch.

0744: Over 32 Giles is right on the spot with his first delivery after lunch but Yousuf then launches him for a huge straight six - it's the third one off the England spinner already in this Test. Both Yousuf and Inzamam then collect easy singles to Andrew Strauss at a slightly deep mid-off and Yousuf rounds off the over with a sweep. It's a positive start by Pakistan who move on to 96 for three.

0740: The players are back out for the second session and Ashley Giles will open up for England against Mohammad Yousuf.

0700: End of session

Pakistan, 1st innings 87 for three

It's been a great effort from England to take three wickets in that session because batting should have been fairly straightforward.

After winning the toss, Pakistan possibly got a bit carried away and all three dismissals came from poor shots.

Inzamam remains at the crease though and will have a key role to play this afternoon.

The second session will start at 0740GMT.

0700: Over 31 It's lunch at the end of that over from Harmison which was a maiden so Pakistan go into the break at 87 for three.

0656: Over 30 Giles' over ends with a shout for leg before against Yousuf. The ball pitched in line and straightened but umpire Simon Taufel says 'not out'. It looked very, very close. Just the one run came off the over when Inzamam swept to fine leg for a single so it's 87 for three.

0653: With the lunch interval approaching, Ashley Giles is going to take over from Flintoff.

0652: Over 29 Inzamam scampers through for a sharp single - not a phrase used too often so far in this series - at the start of Harmison's over and two more follow as the scoreboard nudges up to 86 for three.

0649: There's a bowling change as Harmison takes over from Hoggard.

0648: Over 28 There's a rare false shot from Inzamam in that over from Flintoff but although he edges it, the ball falls well short of the slips area. There's a good response from the Pakistan skipper as a lovely cover drive adds one to the total. The home side are now 83 for three.

0644: Over 27 A single apiece to Yousuf and Inzamam along witb another no-ball - the ninth of the innings - takes Pakistan to 81 for three at the end of that over from Hoggard.

0639: Over 26 There's a maiden from Flintoff and the highlight was another great inswinging yorker, this time to Yousuf. He just keeps it out but batting has suddenly become a little harder on what's still a placid pitch.

0635: Over 25 There's a slight concern for England as Hoggard bowls three no-balls in succession in the middle of that over. Pakistan move to 78 for three at the end of it.

0628: Over 24 An excellent over from Flintoff follows that amazing catch and he almost snares Inzamam with the last delivery, an inswinging yorker only being dug out at the last moment. Pakistan are 74 for three.

0623: Over 23 The wicket ball was the last delivery of Hoggard's over and it brings Inzamam-ul-Haq to the wicket, the Pakistan skipper getting a standing ovation from the packed stands.

0622: WICKET!
Shoaib Malik c Flintoff b Hoggard 27
A simply stunning catch by Flintoff gets rid of Shoaib Malik. He dives full length to his right at short cover to pluck a powerful drive out of the air one-handed in amazing fashion. It's a terrific effort by the big man and leaves Pakistan in trouble on 73 for three.

0618: Over 22 Three singles come off the first over following the drinks break. It's bowled by Flintoff and Pakistan are now 71 for two and playing much more conservatively than earlier.

0612: Over 21 Hoggard just strays down the leg side with the final ball of that over and Malik clips it off his toes for three. There was a single to Yousuf earlier in the over so Pakistan are 68 for two as the drinks trolley comes out for a second time today.

0608: Over 20 Yousuf gets off the mark from the fourth ball he faces and Pakistan are now 64 for two. There were the first signs of reverse swing for Flintoff in that over too so things are suddenly looking more encouraging for England.

0603: Mohammad Yousuf has come out to join Shoaib Malik.

0602: WICKET!
Younis Khan c Pietersen b Flintoff 7
An inspired bowling change from Vaughan pays immediate dividends as Younis Khan flicks Flintoff's first ball straight into the hands of Kevin Pietersen. Pietersen at mid-wicket was the only man in close on the leg side and you have to say it was a horribly loose shot from Khan. Pakistan are 63 for two.

0602: The bowling changes are coming thick and fast from England and Flintoff takes over from Harmison.

0601: Over 19 The first ball of the over finds the edge of Khan's bat but with only one slip in, it's no surprise to see it fly to the vacant third man boundary for four. The Pakistan vice-captain then collects a single and it's 63 for one at the end of Hoggard's over.

0557: Over 18 It's steady stuff from Harmison which is just what England need as he bowls another maiden. His figures now read 5-2-4-1.

0553: Over 17 A decent return from Hoggard is spoilt by two more no-balls - England's fourth and fifth of the innings already - which push Pakistan up to 58 for one.

0548: There's another bowling change for England as Hoggard takes over from Giles.

0547: Over 16 Another good over from Harmison and just the one run comes off it, when Khan fends a lifting delivery off his hips to the square leg boundary. It's 56 for one.

0542: Over 15 There's a single to Malik at the start of Giles' over and then Khan gets off the mark from the penultimate delivery as he turns the ball towards fine leg. It's 55 for one.

0539: Over 14 Four dot balls from Harmison to Younis Khan finishes off an excellent over. It's 53 for one.

0536: Pakistan vice-captain Younis Khan has come out to join Malik.

0534: WICKET!
Salman Butt c G O Jones b Harmison 26
Hats off to Harmison - and probably Vaughan and Duncan Fletcher as well - because that plan to try and get Butt driving to a wide delivery has just worked to perfection. He goes after the second ball of the over and nicks a regulation catch to wicketkeeper Geraint Jones. That's the breakthrough England needed and Pakistan are 53 for one.

0533: Over 13 Butt again goes after Giles, slog-sweeping the second ball of the over to the square leg boundary for four. It went straight through Vaughan, who was positioned square, but was hit with such power that you couldn't even call it a half chance. Pakistan are 52 without loss.

0529: Over 12 An interesting move from Harmison as he slants every ball of that over across Butt and towards first slip. Butt isn't tempted by the majority of the deliveries which mean we have the first maiden of the day.

0523: The drinks trolley comes out for the first time which gives England a chance to regroup after what's been a torrid start to the match.

0522: Over 11 It's clear that Pakistan aren't going to let Giles settle as Butt follows the example of Malik by clubbing the left-armer for six over long-on. It was a great shot as he hit with the spin and he then adds a single to flip the scoreboard on to 47 without loss.

0519: Over 10 A single apiece to Malik and Butt from Harmison's opening over sees Pakistan progress effortlessly to 40 without loss. The Durham paceman looks to be bowling well within himself in the low to mid 80mph region.

0514: It's going to be a double bowling change from Vaughan as Steve Harmison is about to take over from Flintoff.

0513: Over 9 A fascinating first over of spin as Shoaib Malik dances down the wicket to Giles' third ball and launches him over long-on for a huge six. Giles immediately switches to round the wicket to the right-hander and does get the next delivery to turn away nicely from him. But Malik collects a single to mid-on from the following ball and seven runs come off the over in total as Pakistan jump to 38 without loss.

0509: England are going to turn to spin after just eight overs as Vaughan throws the ball to Giles.

0508: Over 8 Just one off the over which comes when Malik flicks the ball off his legs to Ashley Giles at deep mid-wicket. Pakistan are now 31 without loss.

0503: Over 7 The scoring rate has been pegged back by England and two two runs come off the latest over from Hoggard - Butt nudging the ball into the leg side to move the score on to 30 without loss.

0459: Over 6 A decent over from Flintoff, the only run coming from the final ball when Butt tucks it off his legs for a single. It means that after the opening half an hour Pakistan have moved smoothly to 28 without loss.

0455: Over 5 The first over of the morning without a run off the bat, Pakistan adding one to their total courtesy of a no-ball from Hoggard. The home side's batsmen just need to be careful that they don't get carried away on what's clearly a decent batting track - because both Hoggard and Flintoff are finding a little bit of movement in the air.

0451: Over 4 A more encouraging over for Flintoff and England even though four more runs come off it. And that's chiefly because Flintoff first finds the edge of Butt's bat with one that drifts away from him but it drops just short of Marcus Trescothick at first slip and bounces over his hands for four. Butt is then in trouble again later in the over as he's turned inside out and the ball pops up to what would be silly mid-off but there's no fielder in close.

0445: Over 3 The third over starts with Malik flicking the ball in the air just over mid-wicket for four. A single apiece to Malik and Butt as well as England's second no-ball of the morning means Pakistan are 22 without loss and already it's clear it's likely to be a long day in the field for the tourists.

0441: Over 2 Salman Butt carries on where he left off in the first Test as some beautiful timing sees him clip Flintoff off his toes for four to get off the mark. It was an expensive over for England as the first ball was speared down leg side and evaded everyone - including wicketkeeper Geraint Jones - as it flew to the boundary for four byes. There was also a no-ball and 11 runs in total takes Pakistan to 15 without loss.

0436: Andrew Flintoff will share the new ball with Hoggard and will be bowling to Salman Butt as Pakistan play the same opening pair for the first time in eight Tests.

0435: Over 1 It's four without loss after the opening over. The first two deliveries are dot balls, then Malik gets Pakistan off the mark with a lovely cover drive for four. That prompts a decent response from Hoggard as he gets one to swing away from the right-hander. Possibly on account of that, Malik is more watchful for the final two balls of the over.

0430: England are ready to get the opening day under way - Matthew Hoggard will open up against Shoaib Malik.

0415: It's a dry and bright day in Faisalabad ahead of the second Test, with Pakistan 1-0 up in the series following their dramatic 22-run success in Multan.

And it's bad news for England as Michael Vaughan calls incorrectly at the toss and Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq has no hesitation in electing to bat.

Batting first is a hugely significant advantage on most sub-Continental surfaces, and on first inspection the pitch at the Iqbal Stadium looks certain to favour batsmen in the early stages before bringing spin bowlers heavily into the equation.

Join us from 0430GMT onwards for live over-by-over updates as England look to bounce back and level the series.

0400: We're just half an hour away from the start of the opening day of the second Test in Faisalabad and team news is starting to filter through.

Michael Vaughan is definitely back to lead England and Paul Collingwood is the man who misses out after a muted performance in the first Test defeat in Multan.

Pakistan have found a bowling spot for seamer Rana Naved-ul-Hasan - in place of Shabbir Ahmed, who was called for having a suspect action last week - and leg-spinning all-rounder Shahid Afridi takes the place of Hasan Raza at number six in the order.
