The 35-year-old opener impressed with 894 runs in 11 LV= County Championship matches in his debut season for Nottinghamshire to help their title bid and he had been due to return to Trent Bridge for another spell next term.
However, that will not now happen with Jaques taking up a new post with NSW this week which will see him assist head coach Trevor Bayliss and work closely with the youth teams.
Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: "Phil has made a big impact this season and we would never stand in the way of a player in his situation when a job comes along that's a perfect fit."
NSW chief executive Andrew Jones added: "We are very fortunate to have a player of Phil Jaques' calibre return to Cricket NSW.
"We believe that he has the skills and desire to be a very successful coach and his presence greatly enhances the quality of our Academy and Pathway programs."
