The Yorkshireman's score of 154 not out helped him rise 10 places in the rankings to 16th, the highest position in the 23-year old's career.

Root was in 38th position at the beginning of the season and could move higher up the table with strong performances in the remaining four Tests as he is still in the qualification period for batsmen.

Ian Bell is 20th, two places below the exiled Kevin Pietersen, while captain Alistair Cook is 25th. South Africa's AB de Villiers holds the number one spot.

Gary Ballance and Sam Robson also rose up the rankings following their promising performances against India. Ballance's score of 71 saw him move 13 places to 70th, and Robson's 59 runs took him up 16 places to 78th.

Stuart Broad moved into the top 10 of the bowling rankings. His match figures of four for 103 helped lift him four places to 10th.
