Lumb suffered the injury while making 68 against Middlesex on Tuesday, his first half-century of the LV= County Championship season, and is set to miss three games in that competition and six in the NatWest T20 Blast.
"Michael needs a period of rest which is a blow at this stage of the season given his record in all formats," said director of cricket Mick Newell.
"It's very important that we allow him time to recover and get him back into the side knowing that Phil Jaques will only be around for three more weeks."
Australian batsman Jaques has taken Lumb's place in the squad for Thursday evening's 20-over clash with Leicestershire.
