Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first, England were in some trouble at 74-3 in the morning session but, inspired by Joe Root's century and 76 not out from recalled wicketkeeper Matt Prior, they closed the day on an imposing 344-5.

And that means England, even-money shots at the off and odds against after their early struggles, are now odds-on with the draw 13/8 and a win for the tourists out to 9/1.

Matt Prior is 8/13 to be next man out, with Root 6/5 England's innings runs line is set at 5/6 either side of 495.5, with veteran Kumar Sangakkara the 11/4 favourite to top score for Sri Lanka when their turn to bat comes. James Anderson is 5/2 favourite to be England's top bowler in that innings, with Stuart Broad 11/4.
