The Holland all-rounder will skipper the side in the Royal London One-Day Cup and NatWest T20 Blast competitions.
He will take over from James Foster, who will continue to captain the side in the county championship.
Ten Doeschate has played in over 200 limited-over matches for Essex.
Essex head coach Paul Grayson said: "Ryan has got huge experience of playing one-day cricket around the world, particularly Twenty20.
"We feel it is a good opportunity to bring him into a leadership role and I certainly think that this is a positive move forward with a lot of counties now opting to split the captaincy.
"This gives James the opportunity to really concentrate on his play in one-day cricket as it is a tough job to keep wicket, bat and captain the side. I know James supports Ryan in his new role and will continue to do so throughout the season.
"I've spoken to Ryan and he is really excited at the prospect of captaining the team. He's got some new fresh ideas and I think that's good for the dressing room and I look forward to working with him."
