Discarded opener Nick Compton is determined to push his claims for an international recall in the wake of England's Ashes mauling.

Compton was dropped by England prior to last summer's home series against Australia to make way for Joe Root at the top of the order and the Somerset batsman was then overlooked for the tour Down Under.

However, the 30-year-old, who has scored two centuries in his nine Test appearances, is now "desperate" to catch the selectors' eyes again as English cricket looks for answers following a traumatic 5-0 whitewash.

And the grandson of former England great Denis Compton knows he will not be the only fringe player who will be looking to impress once the county season starts up again.

Writing in his column in the Daily Express, Compton said: "So just what do England do next? I guess that is the question all supporters will be asking after a massively disappointing Ashes series.

"As a player, it is hard to know how the selectors will respond. As one of those hoping to regain a batting spot this summer, I intend to get my head down and make plenty of runs.

"Setbacks are part of sport, but when a team takes a hammering the evidence is impossible to ignore and opens up opportunities for others.

"Prospective England players will be rejoining their counties soon thinking this could be their opportunity.

"Right now, it does feel that change is in the air and there may well be more openings for players who might have thought there was no way into the squad a few months ago."

Compton, who has been a prolific runscorer at county level for Somerset in the last few years, added: "From my point of view, I am desperate to prove how hungry I am to fill one of those top-three spots alongside Alastair Cook.

"When we played together last winter we developed a good partnership and I'd love the chance to show I can be the solid rock at the top for the order which successful teams need."
