After a long delay, the weather eased and a 22-over game was scheduled and England were put in to bat.
But after they reached five for no wicket, the rain returned to Trinidad's Queen's Park Oval and play was abandoned.
The second of three ODIs will take place on Friday at the same venue. England were beaten by the hosts in both the final and the last group game of the preceding Twenty20 Tri-Series, which also included New Zealand.
