The 22-year-old bowled 9.1 overs in the first innings of the ongoing second Test in Adelaide before leaving the field with the injury and, though he was able to bat, making an unbeaten 29, he has now been withdrawn from action.

Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said: "James Pattinson sustained a left lower rib injury, similar to a side strain, on day three of the Vodafone Test which will effectively rule him out of contention for the remaining Tests this summer.

"Whilst side strains are not uncommon in bowlers, James' injury involves some damage to the end of the rib and will need further investigation at the completion of this Test to determine the best course of management and the timeframe to return to bowling."

Pattinson's fourth injury in the last year has raised questions over whether the he should have been rested for this Test.

Pattinson suffered a stress fracture of the foot in the second Test against India in January.

He also suffered a back strain against the West Indies in Port of Spain and an abdominal tear in the one-day series against England.
