Jean Symes celebrates the winning runs

Jean Symes hit the winning runs as he rescued the Highveld Lions from a precarious position to guide them into the semi-finals of the Champions League Twenty20 with a five-wicket victory over Yorkshire at the Wanderers.

The Lions were vulnerable when they entered the penultimate over needing 20 to win but Symes smashed a huge six followed by a boundary to change the dynamics of the match.

Two consecutive boundaries off Steven Patterson's first two deliveries of the final over was enough to see the Lions over the line in Johannesburg, finishing on 134 for five after Yorkshire had made 131 for seven.

The Mumbai Indians surrendered their title defence in meek circumstances following a six-run defeat to the Chennai Super Kings.

Mumbai started the day needing favours elsewhere to progress to the semi-finals but a Lions win over Yorkshire in the early game meant they were out even before they reached the Wanderers Stadium.
