Significantly redeveloped for last year's 50-over World Cup, the RPS is the largest stadium in Sri Lanka with a capacity now up at 35,000.
The large, concrete bowl was built on swampland and hosted its first ODI in 1986 and welcomed Test cricket six years later.
The ground has hosted four T20 internationals, and Sri Lanka have lost all four of them - two to New Zealand and one each to Pakistan and India - although the World Twenty20 marks its first T20I action in three years.
The RPS is the main venue for the tournament, hosting two first-round groups as well as a Super Eight pool and all three knockout games, so Sri Lanka will certainly be looking to end that barren run at the ground.
