New Zealand are set to be without the services of Daniel Vettori for their two-match Test series against India.

Daniel Vettori: Set to miss India tour

Vettori was ruled out of the final match against the West Indies in Kingston due to a groin injury and isn't likely to recover in time for the two-Test tour of the sub-continent.

The all-rounder's misfortune opens the door for a debut for leg-spinner Tarun Nethula, a return for off-spinner Jeetan Patel or a recall for spinning all-rounder Rob Nicol.

"It's not looking likely at this stage. There is a 90 per cent chance Dan won't be there," admitted captain Ross Taylor.

"So, we've got to look forward to seeing how the next spinner gets on over there."

The Black Caps lost the series in the Caribbean 2-0, handing the Windies their first Test triumph over a nation other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh in three years.

The tour was coach John Wright's last, with former Kenya coach Mike Hesson set to take over ahead of the visit to India.

"Wright has been a good servant for New Zealand cricket, and it's a bit disappointing to send him off on that note," added Taylor.

"We might not have put it into performances but I'm sure, over the next little while, that a lot of what John has done for the team will come through."

The first Test gets underway in Hyderabad on August 23 and, eight days later, will be followed by the final match in Bangalore.
